In honor of an upcoming event at the Ely Folk School (EFS), I am featuring a cupcake recipe that would be perfect for sharing at a birthday party.
The executive director of the Ely Folk School, Lucy Soderstrom, thoughtfully described the act of sharing food as a way of expressing, without words, that we value each other, sustain each other, and want each other to thrive.
The EFS is celebrating its ninth birthday on June 9, 2024, and they are planning a fun-filled weekend of celebratory events that encapsulate much of the Folk School ethos.
Board chair and instructor, Lacey Squier, articulated that one of the Folk School’s goals is to inspire people to try new things and to give them the necessary tools to feel confident in the process.
Events include a Community Birch Bark Canoe Paddle on June 7, an Old Time Strings Jam Session and a Community Dance on June 8, and a Birthday Potluck on June 9.
Potluck attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to share, especially one that reminds them of their personal or familial celebratory meals or traditions. However, no one is ever turned away from an EFS potluck and the lack of time or resources to bring something to share should not be a barrier to attending a community meal!
The Folk School believes that sharing food with one another is a foundational touch point toward connecting with community, understanding one another, and building a stronger culture.
For event locations and times, please check out the Ely Folk School Website at elyfolkschool.org. Also, to coincide with the EFS birthday, they are in the midst of their annual fundraising campaign. As a nonprofit, EFS depends on community support to enable their programming. They need to raise $30,000 by June 9. People can learn more and donate at www.elyfolkschool.org/ give.
