“Boundary Waters” set for fall premiere

A movie filmed in Ely has been accepted into a pair of film festivals and will premiere this fall.

“Boundary Waters,” which was shot in Ely including at a Harvey Street home,  the city park and on and around the school campus, has been accepted both into the Woodstock Film Festival and the Twin Cities Film Festival.

Its official premiere is at Woodstock, N.Y., with the first screening Oct. 19 at 2:15 p.m. at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, NY.

“Boundary Waters” will also open the Twin Cities Film Festival, on Oct. 18 at St. Louis Park.

Organizers are hosting a sponsored event and a private party after the 5 p.m. showing that day.

In advance of reviews, producers shared some responses to the film, “from artists we deeply admire.”

“Boundary Waters immerses in its young characters, evoking Boyhood, George Washington, The 400 Blows. The film is in turns suspenseful, tender, and rapturous.” — Jonathan Lethem, Novelist.

“Beautifully conceived and highly emotional, Tessa Blake observes the complexities of suburban trauma with sensitivity and grace.” — Jasons Reitman, Filmmaker.

“An extraordinary debut feature from an exquisite filmmaker.” — Virginia Heffernan, Critic.

An online synopsis of the movie reads “In the Iron Range of Minnesota, 12-year-old Michael is exploring the Boundary Waters with his friends and learning to flirt with girls, when one night his mother is badly hurt. Desperate to fix what happened, Michael struggles to become a man in a world where he learns men cause harm.”

The movie stars Etienne Kellichi, Allison Miller and Bill Heck, Miller is best known for her role in the ABC TV Series “A Million Little Things.”

The 98-minute movie was directed by Tessa Blake.

The Woodstock Film Festival website lists this as the narrative: Suspenseful, tender and rapturous, "Boundary Waters" is a lyrical coming of age drama that immerses in its young characters as they navigate a very adult world. Set in the Iron Range of Northern Minnesota, Michael Murray, played beautifully by Etienne Kellici, relishes in the carefree joys of early adolescence - girls and friends - until his mom (Alison Miller) has a black eye and a busted lip, but won’t talk about it. Michael is desperate to know what happened but his father Brian (Bill Heck) avoids him, Granny (Carol Kane) shushes him, and his usually resilient mother can’t get out of bed. While his family weighs the cost of keeping secrets against the price of telling the truth, Michael is determined to unravel the mystery of his hurt mother and his elusive father.
