Home meet coming up on Monday
Northeast Range/Ely took third overall, and tops among Class A schools at a high caliber high school girls golf meet on Monday.
NRE placed only behind Class AA Rock Ridge and Hermantown at the Mesabi East Invitational, held at The Quarry at Giants Ridge.
Three NRE golfers were among the top-12 individual finishers, with Ely’s Carena DeBeltz carding a 100 over 18 holes to tie for seventh.
Abby Koivisto and Maizy Sundblad shot identical 102s, tying for 10th.
Adding to the depth was Danica Sundblad who fired a 112 to take 21st on the day.
Also competing were Ruby Milton (124, 35th) and Cylvia DeBeltz (126, 36th).
The golfers all chased International Falls senior Kelby Anderson, who won the event with an 18-hole 77 and beat her nearest opposition by a whopping 14 strokes.
NRE did not have enough golfers to field a full team for the boys meet held at Giants Ridge.
Wes Sandy shot a 105 to tie for 30th, and fellow senior Robert Towley took 36th with a 113.
• In a May 2 event at Babbitt, Koivisto and Maizy Sundblad tied for fourth with a nine-hole 45, 10 strokes behind Anderson.
As a team, NRE took second and finished 14 strokes in back of Rock Ridge.
Carena DeBeltz and Danica Sundblad tied for 12th with a 53, Cylvia DeBeltz took 14th with a 54 and Milton recorded a 57 and was 17th.
• The golfers get an opportunity to test out the links in Ely on Monday, when NRE hosts an East Range Conference event. The ninehole meet begins at 4:15 p.m.
