ISD 2142 board meets in Babbitt, approves budget; accepts retirement and resignations

The regular meeting of the school board of ISD 2142 St. Louis County Schools was held at Northeast Range School on Tuesday, April 23, at 5 p.m. All board members were present except Ron Marinaro. Also present were superintendent Dr. Reggie Engebritson, business manager Kim Johnson and administrative assistant Jeanne Sopp.

The superintendent’s report, providing updates as they relate to the district’s strategic plan, was presented by Engebritson.

The Northeast Range School Report was presented in three parts. Teachers Morgan Klatt and Christine Mackai gave a tour showcasing the courtyard’s outdoor classroom and the hydroponic gardens located in the STEM classroom.

Students Tuuli Koivisto and Greyson Reichensberger, part of the Iron Mosquitos Robotics Team 5653, demonstrated their competition robot and Olaf robot and provided a colorful, descriptive flier showcasing their team.

Principal John Vukmanich presented a slideshow highlighting many of the things happening at NER.

During comments from visitors, Emily Koch presented a check in the amount of $7,352.89 from the North Woods school PTO to the North Woods school elementary field trip fund. She also requested that the district consider annual enrollment in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The revised 2023-2024 budget and the 2024-2025 budget were approved.

Also approved were the health services 2023-2026 contract, and the teachers 2023-2025 contract.

Support staff hired were: Miranda King - paraprofessional at NER; Mary Jo Olson - paraprofessional at Cherry; and Chuck Hart - substitute van driver at SR.

Coaching staff hired for 20232024 are: Miranda Kelley at SR as softball assistant coach; Richard Williams at SR as baseball assistant coach; Jennifer Burnett at NW as track assistant coach.

Coaching staff hired for 20242025: Abby Arrington at SR as volleyball assistant coach. Ella Smith was hired for the Community Ed staff as a Little Grizzlies student helper at NW.

Retirement and resignations accepted included the retirement of Kim Jirik as teacher/Qcomp coordinator for NW/district; and the resignations of Christina Anderson, teacher - elementary at SR; Alicia Bisbee, van driver at NW; Brent Johnson, football head coach at SR; McKoy Ulshafer, custodian at SR; and Katie Chamernick, check & connect student mentor (Hibbing).

The following teachers were recommended for placement on unrequested leave of absence upon acquiescence of such placement, effective at the end of the 20232024 school year: Amy Nelson of NW, Kathleen Meier of T-S, Loreena Lenzen of Cherry, and Erin Warren of SR.

A voluntary reduction in hours from 25 hours/week to 18.5 hours/ week for Amy Hinkel, paraprofessional at the Tower-Soudan School, was approved effective April 8.
