…the BWCC needs all the support to make this a VA site
Letter to the Editor: As a resident of the BWCC this is great for me. But, I am a Vietnam Veteran who is 90 percent disabled. I receive a comp from the VA. The state department of Human Services says it is income. The federal government says it is protected. They are trying to get me to give them this money I get each month. The federal government says it cannot be used for federal programs. I received medical assistance which is a federal program. The federal government says this is exempt. I pay no taxes on it state or federal. This is part of the Blue Water Navy act of 2019, and the Pack act of 2020. What is going to happen to the gulf war disabled veterans who have to go into non VA nursing homes will they loose all their disability also? The DHS website says under Military exempt money it cannot be used as income. Also in the DHS it says if they do not pay federal or state taxes it is exempt. What is happening here? They are going to evict me for not giving my disability to them.
The BWCC needs all the support to make this a VA site so we can get proper treatment, and not get our disability taken away from us. Like it said in the article I would have to travel over 60 miles, or my family would to see me. I have lived in this area for 20 years and I do not want to go back to Minneapolis to find a nursing home. Most of the VA sites are filled up now, and we have the gulf war vets coming up. Two harbors if full, and now going from two to a room to one to a room. So that is out for a few years.
