The Ely Sports Hall of Fame Committee began taking nominations for the ESHOF Class of 2024 in September of 2023. The nominating process ended on March 1. The committee met recently to cast their final votes. Nominees from 1980-2009 were considered. The class of 1976 included inductees from the pre-1930s – 1950s. The class of 1996 included inductees from the 1960s and 1970s.
The committee was made up of coaches (past and present), officials, opposing coaches, ex-Ely athletes and media personnel. The committee had 18 members, 17 of which casted final ballots when the selection voting took place. Nominees needed to receive 75% of the votes to be named to the ESHOF Class of 2024. The committee took the following into consideration.
Criteria
The Ely Sports Hall of Fame will serve to honor student athletes, coaches, administrators, teams as well as longtime and distinctive supporters of and contributors to Ely Sports that have been nominated for consideration to be inducted into the ESHOF.
Student Athlete
The nominee must be a graduate of Ely Memorial High School between 1980 and 2009. *(Candidates have to be 15 years removed from graduation). The nominee had to have participated in varsity level sport(s) at the high school. The candidate must have made a positive impact to the team(s) for which they participated, including demonstrated athletic achievement, exemplary leadership qualities and character, and/or significant contribution to the community.
Coach/Administrator
Nominee must have coached or been on staff at Ely Memorial High School between 1980 and 2009. The nominee shall have demonstrated an ability to enhance the athletic experience of the student athlete, while serving as a positive role model through exemplary leadership and character.
Teams
Nominees must be successful teams that have reached state level competition in given season and the season took place between 1980 and 2009. Teams must have had Minnesota State High School League status during the season for which they are being nominated.
Special Contributors
A nominee need not be a graduate or former employee of Ely Memorial High School. Strong consideration will be given to those nominees who have enhanced the experience of student athletes in Ely Sports between 1980 and 2009, through their ongoing support by giving their time, expertise and/ or resources. Modeling of sportsmanship and dedication while inspiring others is valued. Longevity of contributions over time is essential. (Contributions of time, energy and money will receive consideration) Voting Protocol
1) Final nominee bios will be sent to committee members on week prior to the selection meeting. That said, it is highly recommended that committee members take the time to research nominees on their own also.
2) The class of 2024 will be chosen from the public nominations received by March 1, 2024 3) The selection/voting meeting is scheduled for March 18, 2024 in the Sunrise Room at the GEL.
4) A minimum of 12 committee members have to cast votes. Absentee voting has been approved by the committee.
5) The committee will vote each category separately. Special Contributors and athlete nominees by decade. There will be a 15 minute discussion before voting on each category. The voting will be done as a secret ballot. After ballots are collected the voters will move on to the next category. Votes will be tabulated after the selection meeting and finalized.
6) Committee members that are also nominees will abstain from voting for themselves.
7) For a nominee to be voted into the ESHOF Class of 2024 he/she will have to receive 75% of the votes cast by the committee.
There will be an induction event for the Ely Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2024 on Tuesday, July 2 in the Miners’ Dry building in Ely as part of the All-Class Reunion festivities.
