Last Saturday saw the 49th annual St. Urho’s Celebration in Finland, MN. The weather was poor, but Finns are made from a hardy stock so the turnout was great. In the sea of purple and green, there were dozens of smiling children getting a taste of Finnish culture. When you start them young, they will be back for more. The lihamojakka lunch fed over 200 people and will help fund next year’s festivities, along with the sale of T-shirts, buttons, and souvenirs. Brainstorm Bakery put out a lovely selection of baked goods with a sisu twist and Iris, their signature mascot, wore purple and green with pride. A few days before St. Urho’s Day, History Happy Hour was held at the Boathouse Brewpub’s Lookout Lounge. The host, Jess Edberg, did a wonderful job presenting the history of St. Urho and the people behind this joyous event. The best part was a darling little girl in attendance who wore a grape costume. There is renewed hope that St. Urho may make it to the next generation.
