At the Lake County board meeting on Tuesday March 12, Environmental Services Director Christine McCarthy updated the board on the new recycling process which will begin March 29.
The change is being made after a request about one year ago by the DAC (Developmental Achievement Center) for the county to address wages and asking the county to take over management of the recycling center.
As of March 29, the recycling center in Two Harbors will be open from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays, with a dropoff option until 9 p.m. Monday- Thursday.
“Change can be good,” McCarthy comments. “We are taking the opportunity to decide how to process and how to staff it. Nobody is losing a job.”
A group of decision-makers spent several days at the Capitol in St. Paul recently and reported back that they made very good use of time there. They discussed everything from the Pulsar Helium project with the DNR to the Community Wildfire Defense Grant.
They spent a solid hour with state representatives reviewing legislative bills relevant to Lake County.
County Chairman Rich Sve said, “They were up to speed; we just filled in the blanks.”
Land Commissioner Nate Eide was also on hand at the meeting to explain that, due to the warm and dry conditions this winter, logging sales that are expiring March 31, 2024, for the first, second, or third time will be allowed to be extended one additional year with no interest added and/or no requirement to pay the sale in full.
Some logging did happen especially in the northern part of the county, said Eide, but very little, and in many places there was no logging at all.
It was also noted that fire risk is “high” for Lake County right now and that no open burning is allowed, though campfires are still permitted.
