Ely Echo/Grand Ely Lodge Ice Out Contest gathers 74 entries

Entries have been pouring in to the Ely Echo/Grand Ely Lodge Shagawa Lake Ice Out Contest.

Entries are being accepted by email at events@elyecho. com by March 27.

Our earliest guess has already come to pass. That one came from Kathy Shanahan of Sister Bay, WI, March 4 at 2:42 p.m.

Next up was Jerelyn Montgomery of Babbitt, March 13 at 3:33 p.m. followed by Adam Bisbee of Ely, March 14 at 1:59 p.m.

We had two guesses for March 17, Guy Borglund at 9:15 a.m. and Mary Kubes of Fairbault, MN, at 6:06 p.m.

High noon was the guess from Wesley Kauppi of East Bethel, MN on March 20.

There was one guess for March 22, from Dick Turnbull of Duluth, MN, at 2 p.m. Several Ely guessers are next, starting with Shauna Vega on March 23 at 5:09 p.m.; Deb Murawski on March 24 at 3:24 p.m.; Deb Szutenback on March 26 at 11:15 a.m. and Steve Rhode of Ely on March 27 at 7 a.m.

Picking March 27 was Shirley Kapsch at 4:17 p.m.

There was a trio of March 29 guesses: Richard Loisel of Waukegan, IL, at 9:48 a.m., Val Hill of Gilbert, MN, at 2:31 p.m. and Mary O’Halloran of Ely, at 2:43 p.m.

Selecting March 30 were: Bonnie Borglund of Lakeville, MN, at 11:40 a.m.; Audra Bird of Rogers, MN, at 2 p.m.; Steve Kapsch of Portland, OR, at 2:40 p.m.; Jessica Dunn of Ely, at 3:26 p.m. and Donna Meier of Winton at 3:30 p.m.

Ice out will be the last day of March according to Pam Masloski of Lakeville, MN, picking at 4 p.m.

No fooling for Dwayne Meier, Winton, who chose April 1 at 2 p.m.

Our April 2 guessers were Bob Anderson of Babbitt, MN, at 10:10 a.m.; Wyat Kauppi of East Bethel, MN, at 1:02 p.m.; Kimberly Puzel of Ely, at 2:22 p.m. and Judy Swenson of Ely, at 3:30 p.m.

Sending in guesses of April 3 were Brian Bird of Rogers, MN, at 10:15 a.m.; Nancy Johnson of Roseville, MN, at 11:30 a.m.; Marcea Kauppi of Virginia, at 2:30 p.m. and Naomi Milbrett of Waseca, MN, at 3:33 p.m.

Five for April 4 with Tricia Schreffler of Ely at 11:15 a.m.; Kendra Kauppi of Lauderdale, MN, at 1:04 p.m.; Jack Dulinsky of Ely, at 1:30 p.m.; Shirley Kidd of Ely, at 4 p.m. and Libby Hill of Gilbert, MN, at 4:44 p.m.

Looking for ice out on April 5 were Steve Kennedy of Pekin, IL, at 11 a.m.; Abbi Hanley at 11:15 a.m.; Vicki Wagner of Ely at 11:43 a.m. and David Petersmeyer of Savage, MN, at 1:33 p.m.

There were a pair of April 6 submissions, Mike Mc-Namara of Stillwater, MN, at 6:39 a.m. and Kay DeRidder of Park Forest, MN, at 5:50 p.m.

Bud Ahrens of Ely picked April 7 at 10:44 a.m.

All the way from Lakeville, MN was Rick Masloski who guessed April 8 at noon.

Ely’s Rosemarie Vejtasa of Ely, sent in April 9 at 1 p.m.

Going for April 10 were Jennifer Petersmeyer of Savage, MN, at 10:11 a.m.; Phil Meier of Ely, at 1 p.m.; Diane Kennedy of Pekin, IL, at 2 p.m. and Catherine Loisel of Waukegan, IL, at 3 p.m.

Going with April 11 was Mike Kostecky of Andover, MN, at 2:22 p.m.

Will it be April 12? That would be good for Bob Murphy of Roseville, MN, who entered at 6:25 a.m. and Sarah Burger of Ely, who chose 11:02 a.m.

Ely pickers for April 13 were Warren Burger at 10:30 a.m. and Jenny Meier at 3 p.m.

One guess for April 14, that was Lori McNamara of Stillwater, MN, at 6:40 a.m.

Tax day was a popular choice: Joe Shikonya of Lacrosse, WI, at 9:01 a.m.; Dawn Anderson at 1:37 p.m.; Patrick Robinson at 2 p.m.; Connie Olson of Hills, MN, at 2:30 p.m.; Terry Cooper of Ely, at 4:15 p.m. and Ben Kubes of Ely at 6:17 p.m.

Malisa Tomek of Andover, MN, sent in a guess of April 16 at 3:04 p.m.

April 17 is the day for Chrissy Nelson of Virginia, at 10:15 a.m.

There were four submissions for April 18: Bill De-Riddel of Park Forest, IL, 10:53 a.m.; James Nelson of Virginia, at 11:15 a.m.; Rochelle Olson of Hills, MN, at 1:45 p.m. and Linda Frisell of Ely, at 3:44 p.m.

A pair of April 19 guesses came from Eric Nelson of Virginia, at 11 a.m. and Jon Bagge of Babbitt, at 3 p.m.

April 20 is the day for Elys Tara Forsman at 11:15 a.m.

Babbitt guesser Erika Bagge went with April 23 at 3 p.m.

Looking on the calendar at April 28 was Todd & Karen Lucachick of Cohasset, MN, at 4:24 p.m.

We had an April 29 guess from Ot Derr of Longmont of CO, at 10:29 a.m.

All the way from Embarrass Brian Lamppa picked April 30 at 10:14 a.m.

And looking all the way to May 3 was JoAnn Derr of Longmont, CO at 10:33 a.m.

Ice out is official when a boat could leave Grand Ely Lodge’s dock and cross to the north side of the lake, chunks of ice notwithstanding.

Times which are duplicate: only the earliest entry wins. There are no duplicate prizes. It may pay to submit your guess as early as possible, but only one guess is allowed per person. Each entry MUST have a complete name, address and phone number as well as the date and time of day for the guess. Incomplete entries are thrown out.

Earliest correct entry wins. 1st Prize: $100 Grand Ely Lodge Guest Bucks. Second prize is $50 Ely Echo gift certificate, third prize: $25 Grand Ely Lodge Bucks. Employees of Grand Ely Lodge and the Ely Echo are not eligible to win prizes.

One entry per person, no more than three entries per single household application by email.
