From the Northeast Range Principal: Unique supports and course offerings

In this article I would like to focus on some of the unique supports and course offerings that Northeast Range offers that set us apart from other schools. Being a part of a larger district, we have the opportunity to hire supports and offer unique coursework that may not be available, while keeping class sizes manageable.

For the 24-25 school year, NER is pleased that we are able to offer college welding through our vocational department. Because of collaboration with MN North, ALI (Applied Learning Institute), and our district, we are able to provide our welding students with a college welding instructor four hours per week to supplement the instruction provided by Mr. Lindsay, our welding teacher.

Students who qualify for College In Schools credit receive the credit while at NER. Students whose GPA does not allow them to qualify for the college credit still receive college level welding training and once enrolled in a future welding program at MN North will receive credit through the college system for our course. We are proud of being able to offer this program to connect our students directly to post-secondary programs and the workforce.

Mental wellness is a topic at the forefront of many education discussions. Schools have become much more receptive to the idea that mental health and trauma play a huge part in student success in school.

Our school district was fortunate enough to receive a Project Aware Grant from the State of MN. This grant in part has helped fund a social worker position in our school.

Northeast Range is lucky enough to have Mrs. Tara Flatley as a school social worker.

Her role is to support wellness and mental health in our students, help connect students to resources outside of school, and de-escalate students in crisis, among other things.

We appreciate her support of our students and her expertise in guiding students through challenges.

Ms. Flatley’s role, along with Check and Connect mentor Jaden Scherer, Dean/Counselor Rachael Thom, and Kelsey Velcheff/Taylor Westin from Range Mental Health make up a supportive and expert team to help support our students. Couple this resource team with our top-notch staff, and we have a system in place to truly support student success.

Our school values the relationships that we have with our students and families.

Please reach out if you ever have any questions or concerns, or if your student may need some extra support.
