An 80-year-old woman was killed from injuries she suffered Monday in a fire outside Ely's nursing home. Marjorie Jane Hible of Ely, who was a resident of the Boundary Waters Care Facility, was identified Wednesday night as the victim. The State Fire Marshal continues to investigate this fire, but preliminary findings suggest smoking likely caused this accidental fire.
According to a news release issued Tuesday by the Ely Police Department, authorities were dispatched to the Boundary Waters Care Center at approximately 4:38 pm, when a witness reported the fire to 911.
The victim was fully engulfed before staff members were able to get her off of the scooter.
The victim suffered severe burns and was initially transported to Ely-Bloomenson Community Hospital, and later airlifted to a hospital in Duluth. The victim was later pronounced dead from her injuries.
A nursing home staff member received non-life threatening injuries and was treated and released from the Ely hospital.
The Ely Police Department thanked the Ely Fire Department, Ely Area Ambulance Service, Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital, Boundary Waters Care Center staff, Babbitt Police Department, St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, St. Louis County Dispatchers and Life Link.
