From the Northeast Range Principal Wellness Day and Ag Day Wednesday at NER

Northeast Range School is very fortunate to be a part of St. Louis County Schools’ “Project Aware” Grant, which funds many things related to student and staff wellness and mental health.

Through our grant, we are able to have a school social worker, a staff wellness space, and a student sensory space. To help our school tie these resources together with local resources, our Student Leadership Team, made up of 8th through 12th grade students at NER, was able to organize Northeast Range Wellness Day 2024.

Our event was held Wednesday, May 15 and took place throughout the day at NER in the gym, auditorium, and courtyard. In attendance were several area resources including Fairview Health, United Way, Range Mental Health, United Way, PAVSA (Program to Assist Victims of Sexual Assault). Our Indian Education Department provided a station for beading, willow craft, and buckskin crafting. In addition, Cook Country Connection attended with their llamas and goats, which were a huge hit with the students.

Our goal is to showcase the services and resources available in our school and region to support our students and staff. Thanks to Project Aware coordinator Alicia Dick, school social worker Tara Flatley, and our excellent Student Leadership Team for their hard work in planning and hosting our event.

Northeast Range Elementary “Ag Day Wednesday” Once a month on a Wednesday, NER Elementary hosts an Agriculture Day, or “Ag Day” for short. Through a grant, we are able to transport our partners from Tower-Soudan Elementary to Northeast Range for this event, and share the day.

On Wednesday, May 15, students learned about farming from Tom and Morgan Klatt. They brought bunnies and baby chicks, as well as a diesel 4x4 tractor.

Lessons have varied from week to week with topics such as dairy farms, corn, hydroponics, and other agricultural-related topics. Our school was even able to purchase hydroponic towers, which you may have seen, and grow lettuce for our school cafeteria.

The US Forest Service was also here to talk about forest regeneration and management.

Our outdoor classroom is also under way in the elementary courtyard, and once complete, we will showcase this in a future article.
