A Pile Burning Workshop will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to noon in room 104 on the Vermilion campus. The event is free to attend, no registration required. Participants will relocate to the Forest Service building after the classroom portion for hands-on activities (bring outdoor clothing and boots). Learn about basic fire behavior and how to remove and safely pile burn hazardous woody debris. Experienced wildland firefighters will be present and there will be a live pile burning demonstration if weather and wildfire risk conditions allow.
At the Ely Public Library on Saturday, October 12 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. will be a Wild Wild West Mystery Event for adults and teens in grades 9-12. Each participant will have a custom written role to play, similar to a murder mystery dinner party. This event is expected to last about three hours; participants should plan to stay for the entire period as leaving early will affect everyone’s ability to solve the mystery. Also, everyone will need to pre-register for this event by 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7 in order to give staff enough time to prep all the individual roles. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.
The Sectionals, the premier jazz ensemble of Northern Minnesota, will perform at Ely’s Historic State Theater on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 4 p.m. The Sectionals, hailing from all across the Iron Range, cover a broad range of music and genres, in addition to their many jazz standards. The Ely Weaver and Fiber Arts Group will meet on Monday, Oct. 14, at 11:30 a.m. at the Grand Ely Lodge.
At the Ely Public Library on Monday, Oct. 14 at 12:30 p.m. will be WPA Art History with MN Art Historians Sue and Brian Matuszak. Incorporating humor and history, Brian and Sue will talk about Minnesota artists and the public artworks they created throughout the Arrowhead Region of Minnesota during the Federal Art Project, a program sponsored by the Works Progress Administration of President Roosevelt in 1935.
At the Ely Public Library on Monday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. will be the Friends of the Library Bookclub. The book for discussion this month is The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich. You do not need to be a member of Friends of the Library to attend.
The Ely Ladies of Kaleva will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 15 beginning at 1 p.m. at the Ely Senior Center. The Marsalji Trio will play a program of Finnish music. Anyone interested in Finnish heritage is welcome to attend. Questions can be directed to Sally at 218-760-2036.
At the Ely Public Library on Friday, Oct. 18 at 1:30 p.m. it’s Get Crafty: Fall Craft Stations for all ages. Come do stop autumn themed crafts with Tricia with this station-based craft program. Try as many of the projects as look interesting. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.
The Oktoberfest Fundraiser for the Ely Winter Festival will be held on Friday, Oct. 18, from 6-9 p.m. at Grand Ely Lodge. Tickets are $45 and include a delicious German dinner, a raffle, a silent auction, live music by the Largemouth Brass Ensemble and a costume contest.
The 100 Ely Women Who Care giving circle will hold its fall meeting at the Ely Senior Center on Sunday, Oct. 27 starting at 4 pm. The giving circle is a group of women who gather together to collectively support a nominated and then voted on local 501c3 non-profit organization twice each year and enjoy a potluck of appetizers and desserts. The Ely Chamber of Commerce has announced an upcoming Northwoods Business Incubator session featuring Nick Dunnom from Sunbelt Business Advisors. The session will be Wednesday, Oct. 30, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the International Wolf Center.
