Swimmers show improvement

Rock Ridge came away with the dual meet victory, but Northeast Range/Ely had its highlights during the high school girls swimming dual meet at the Rock Ridge school.

The host Wolverines piled up points early on to take control of Tuesday’s matchup, but NRE senior Anna Larson helped curb the momentum with a solid victory in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:12.31.

Junior Via DeBeltz continued to lead in distance events, pacing her team and placing second overall in the 500 freestyle in 6:20.67.

Larson also was the runner-up in the 200 individual medley in 2:46.87.

Rock Ridge’s top relay entered only in exhibition in the 200 freestyle relay, allowing the NRE combination of Brynn Larson, Alyssa Ice, Tuuli Koivisto and Larson to win in 1:58.53.

An exhibition swim also gave NRE a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay, as Anna Larson teamed up with Brynn Larson, Ivy Ohlhauser and DeBeltz to win in 4:28.99.

“There was lots of improvement overall,” said NRE Head Coach Cheri DeBeltz. “The girls are starting to get their feet under them and figuring all this out. ”

Other NRE top-three finishes were:

• 200 medley relay - 2. DeBeltz, Jorden Borchert, Koivisto, Ice, 2:22.69;

• 200 freestyle - 3. DeBeltz, 2:21.43;

• 50 freestyle - 3. Ice, 28.19;

• 100 freestyle - 3. Ice, 1:06.04;

• 200 freestyle relay - 2. Ohlhauser, Jorden Borchert, Lindsay Israel, Isla Carlson, 2:14.10; 3. Moon Vetos-Keen, Raegan Borchert, Bela Moskowitz, Maddie Johnson, 2:25.68;

• 100 backstroke - 3. Sabrah Hart, 1:31.72;

• 100 breaststroke - 3. Jorden Borchert, 1:28.58

• 400 medley relay - 2. Israel, Carlson, Hart, Jorden Borchert, 5:18.68.

In the junior varsity meet, Vetos- Keen picked up a win in the 50 freestyle while NRE individual second-place finishes went to Carlson (200 freestyle), Evelyn Moran (100 backstroke) and Lucy Luthens (100 breaststroke).

• In a Sept. 5 meet at Aurora, host Mesabi East won the first nine events on the way to a 96-67 dual meet victory.

During the contested portion of the meet, NRE’s Anna Larson (100 butterfly), 1:11.97) and DeBeltz (500 freestyle, 6:25.37) gained individual second-place finishes.

DeBeltz and Larson also joined forces with Ice and Jorden Borchert to take second in the 200 medley relay.

Once Mesabi East moved to exhibition swimming, Madison Jonas picked up an individual win in the 100 backstroke (1:29.23) and Koivisto edged teammate Jorden Borchert by .03 seconds to win the 100 breaststroke.

The Nighthawks are set to take part in in a multi-team event at Hibbing on Saturday.
