Wins just keep coming for 14U

Ely’s age 14 and under baseball team wasn’t tested this week as it remained unbeaten and moved into sole possession of first place.

A season-long unbeaten string reached eight games as Ely disposed of visiting Chisholm 18-8 in five innings at Veterans Memorial Field.

Drew Johnson’s inside the park home run in the bottom of the first was the sparkplug of a five-run outburst, and the hosts also had four runs in both the third and fifth frames and scored in every inning.

Johnson had two hits and scored twice while leadoff man Tyde Brecke had two singles and scored two runs.

Owen Marolt reached base all four times he was up and scored four runs for the winners. Sean Merriman added two hits, Grant Chittum contributed two hits and two runs scored  and Stig Majerus doubled and scored twice.

Max Brandriet also scored two runs to help back the pitching of Majerus who recorded nine strikeouts.

It was an even easier victory Monday as Ely rolled past visiting Hibbing II 20-0 in five innings.

Marolt fired the shutout, allowing only three hits with five strikeouts.

Ely sent 17 batters to the plate in the bottom of the second, plating 12 runs and the rout was on.

Brecke had three hits with three runs scored and both Merriman and Christian Gates scored three times.

Evan Leeson singled and scored twice while Marolt tripled in a two-hit game with two runs scored and three runs batted in.

Chittum wound up with two hits and two RBI.

Ely puts its perfect record on the line Monday at Rock Ridge III, and has make up games ahead with Greenway and Grand Rapids.

Ely will likely have the top seed for the 13-team Iron Range Baseball Playoffs, which will be held Aug. 4-6 at Veterans Memorial Field.
