Two Wolves make All-District team

Ely’s high school football team has a pair of all-district honorees and a third who gained honorable mention.

Seniors Deegan Richards and Chase Anderson were selected to the North All-District Team, as picked by league coaches.

Also honored was fellow senior Braydin Mosher, who gained honorable mention.

The recognition comes after a year in which the Wolves moved up to 11-man football on a full-time basis and were very competitive in most of their games, but only had one victory to show for it.

Richards, a two-way starter for the Wolves, was probably Ely’s most explosive player.

At various points in the season, Richards served as Ely’s quarterback, top running back and principal receiver and was the team’s most potent return man.

For the season, Richards paced the Wolves with nearly 400 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns.

During the season, he also returned a kick 85 yards for a touchdown and passed for a score, while also ending up with four receiving touchdowns.

“Deegan was our best overall athlete,” said head coach Louie Gerzin. “He was the guy we wanted to get the ball to with some space on the field as he was capable of breaking one at any time.”

Richards, an all-district honorable mention honoree a year ago, was also a standout on defense with 28 tackles and two interceptions.

Anderson ran for 45 yards this season while the bulk of his work was on the offensive line, where he served as Ely’s starting center and the anchor of the offensive front.

He also finished as one of Ely’s leading tacklers and joined Mosher in leading a group of capable linemen.

On defense, Anderson led with 53 tackles, a couple of fumble recoveries and a forced fumble, while Mosher recorded 28 tackles.

“Chase and Mosh both had huge seasons for us,” said Gerzin. “They really were irreplaceable on our line.”
