by Tom Coombe

Anna Larson had an individual victory and was part of a first-place relay as Northeast Range/Ely took second Tuesday at a triangular event.

Host Cloquet-Esko-Carlton won the Lumberjack Log Jam, but the  Nighthawks were a solid second, well ahead of third-place Stella Maris Academy of Duluth.

“We had a great night,” said NRE Head Coach Cheri DeBeltz. “Lots of fun for our young team.”

Larson, one of two Nighthawks swimmers to earn All-Iron Range Conference recognition at the IRC meet the week before, teamed with All-IRC honoree Alyssa Ice, Tuuli Koivisto and Via DeBeltz to win the 200 freestyle relay convincingly. Their time was 1:57.95, almost eight seconds better than the runner-up combination from CEC.

Larson, a junior, also pulled out a victory in the 100 butterfly in 1:12.45.

Via DeBeltz had not one but two individual runner-up performances.

Koivisto also was second - in the 500 freestyle (6:29.49)  - and Larson added a second-place finish in a razor-tight 50 freestyle (28.19) race decided by two-tenths of a second.

Ice battled Cloquet’s Allie Laine to the finish in the 100 freestyle, placing second in 1:04.77, just .18 seconds behind the winner.

Larson, Ice, Koivisto and Via DeBeltz also teamed up to take second in the 400 freestyle (4:19.38).
