DOUGLAS WILLIAM

DOUGLAS WILLIAM KESS, 75, died on February 11, 2024 at home in Naselle, Washington, having suffered from pulmonary fibrosis. He had only recently returned home after several months of trying to find a hospital for a lung transplant. He was the third of Roy and Merna Kess’ six sons and was born in Winton, MN on February 25, 1948. In school he was active in Boy Scouts, football and swimming.

He won a scholarship to New College at the University of Florida. It was there that he met future wife Karen Spackman. They were married for more than 50 years.

They lived in St. Paul, Brussels, Lyon, France, and Menlo Park, CA, where Karen had a successful career in super computing. Douglas began doctoral studies in statistics but ultimately became the full time caregiver for his wife and young daughter Elizabeth Senja Spackman. They built a retirement home in Naselle, WA, where Douglas became active in oceanography, conservation, marine management and sustainable forestry. He was also actively involved in Democratic politics in Pacific County.

Douglas was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Randall. He is survived by his brother David (Sally), Donald (Becky deceased), Paul (Laurie), and Peter (Nina) all of Ely and, two nephews, and three nieces, and his beloved dog, Django.

A visitation has been held and a Celebration of Life was held on Saturday, February 24. Condolences may be sent to 162 Government Road, Naselle, WA 986738.
