Betty LaVerne Rhein, age 86, of Ely, passed away at Carefree Living in Ely on Friday, June 14, 2024. 

Betty was born in Winton on June 2, 1938, to Joseph and Mildred Koschak and was a lifelong resident of Ely. She graduated from Ely Memorial High School. In 1958, she married Alan Rhein and together they raised two sons, Keith and Gregory and daughter Susan. 

Her work career started at the Winton Hospital until the hospital closed and then she started at the Ely­ Bloomenson Community Hospital where she worked in the hospital, OB department, nursing home and ending her career as a home health aide for the surrounding community. 

Betty was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Heart of the Woods Quilters. In her earlier years, she was a member of the Ely Drum & Bugle Corps, manager at the Girl Scout camp on Fenske Lake, den mother for the Cub Scouts and troop leader for the Girl Scouts. 

She is survived by her sons Keith (Kay) Rhein of Coon Rapids, MN and Gregory Rhein of Ely, daughter Susan (Wayne) Karge of Anchorage, AK; grandchildren Bethany (Jeff) Brunton and their daughter Olivia and son Myles, Matthew (Julia) Rhein, Jennifer (Jason) Gaines and sons Zachary and Quinton, Timothy Karge. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. 

She is preceded in death by her husband Alan, her parents, sister Phyllis and brother Patrick. 

Her memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, June 21st at the First Presbyterian Church.
