Letter: …Ely Senior Center in need of repairs

Dear Editor:
Ely Senior Citizens are looking for help to repair and upgrade their building.
The Ely Senior Center is a very old building and is in need of repairs and an upgrading. The Ely Senior Citizens have owned the building for 40 years. We are a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization serving all Ely area citizens.
The windows are 40 years old and leak badly. The electrical and kitchen need new equipment and brought up to code.
Monday through Friday Ely area citizens are served meals prepared in the kitchen by AEOA. Carryout meals are also provided daily and delivered by an AEOA bus to Ely Seniors. We also provide transportation by AEOA bus to appoint-ments and businesses.
The center also serves as the home of Oasis International a religious group that conducts services each Sunday morning.
Other groups that use the Senior Center include: Northwoods Partners, Home Health Care, 100 Women that Care, Ely Hospital rummage sale, TOPS, Monday night smear on the first and third Monday and Cribbage on the second and fourth Monday, Line Dancing, Nail Clinics, Bridge Groups, Folk School sponsored barn dances open to all area youth and adults. We also have weddings and family gatherings. The State of Minnesota drivers license tests are here so area citizens don’t have to drive to Virginia. The building is also used as Ely’s voting place for State and Federal and local elections.
Our main source of income is our Bingo which is held on Wednesdays at 1 pm. This helps pay for our insurance, fuel and utilities.
The building is also available for rent to businesses, organizations and individuals.
If your business, organization or individual can help with a tax deductible donation we would deeply appreciate it. In addition to your donation we have matching funds available and are applying for grants.
The Ely Senior Citizens have a luncheon membership drive in the beginning of the year and membership is $6 for the year. You can become a member at age 55. We need you!
