Gerald “Gerry” Salo, 85, of Tower, Minn. passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, September 2, 2022 at his son Darrel’s house in Red Wing.
Gerry was born on February 24, 1937 in Embarrass, Minn. to Francis and Lila (Maki) Salo. He graduated high school and joined the Navy. After the Navy, Gerry married Kathy Pucel and together they had three children; Darrel (Dollie) Salo, Terry Salo and Debra (Chris) Hedin. Kathy passed away in 1986. Gerry later married his high school sweetheart, Joanie Lindsoe who also had grown children; Dawn (Scott) Chaffee, Sue (Mike) Maternowsky, Greg (Marcy) Lindsoe, and Chris Lindsoe. Together they started the second chapter of Gerry’s life in Tower, Minn.
Gerry loved the outdoors and spent his whole life fishing, hunting, picking blueberries, eating numerous baked goods, and watching sports. He also enjoyed spending time with his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews from both of his families. Joanie passed in 2016 and Gerry remained in their home until his health declined.
In 2020, Gerry moved in with Darrel and Dollie in Red Wing, where he started the final chapter of his life. He enjoyed running errands with Dollie, stopping for beer and cheese curds, going for car rides around the Mississippi River, and patronizing many of the local restaurants. As his health declined, he still enjoyed his nightly Bismarck and cup of coffee, and numerous episodes of Mannix. Gerry always had a twinkle in his eye and loved when family and friends came to visit.
There will be a graveside burial at 11 a.m., September 24, 2022 at the Ely Cemetery followed by a Celebration of Life a the Lindsoe Cabin located on Fall Lake. A special thank you to the St. Croix Hospice for the love and care they showed Gerry in his last days.
