BEST’s Mathson sets state home run mark

Josh Mathson swung his way into the Minnesota baseball record book last week. The senior at Babbitt-Embarrass has more home runs than any high school baseball player in state history. He smashed his third round-tripper of the season - and 26th of his prep career - in Thursday’s 11-1 win at Cook. With the blast, he passed 1986 Brainerd graduate Travis Peterson, who had 25 homers in his high school baseball career, and moved into first place on Minnesota’s prep baseball home run list.Mathson tied Peterson’s mark during an April 24 game at Deer River, with an opposite field blast that landed on top of the roof of the Deer River school.Mathson is a five-year starter for BEST (Babbitt-Embarrass-Soudan-Tower) and has helped the Beavers to back-to-back appearances in the Minnesota State Class A Tournament. In 2003, Mathson set a Minnesota single-season record with 14 home runs, including seven during the Section 7A playoffs.Mathson pitches and plays shortstop for BEST, 6-1 on the season.
