Homer earns All-IRC honors

NRE girls second at league meet

Tommy Homer picked a great day to have his best outing of the spring.

The Ely senior finished fourth at Wednesday’s Iron Range Conference high school boys golf meet, and he earned all-conference recognition in the process.

Homer topped the Northeast Range/Ely boys at The Quarry at Giants Ridge, while the NRE girls placed second - behind only Rock Ridge in the team standings.

The high school season is hitting its home stretch with a series of meets this week leading to section competition at McGregor at the end of the month.

Homer is making a hard charge toward sections, carding an 83 over 18 holes at the IRC meet, just two strokes behind co-winners Drake Klakoski (Rock Ridge) and Caiden Carpenter (Greenway/ Nashwauk-Keewatin).

The next-best NRE golfers at the IRC were Alex Merriman, who took 28th with a 96, and Robert Towley, who recorded a 97 and tied for 30th.

Wes Sandy (35th, 105) and Lewis Powell (42nd, 110) rounded out the NRE lineup and the boys team took sixth overall.

The girls were a strong second, behind only Rock Ridge, with five golfers in the top-15.

Abby Koivisto took eighth with a 96, heading a consistent group of NRE golfers followed by Danica Sundblad (ninth, 99), Maizy Sundblad (10th, 100), Carena De-Beltz (11th, 101) and Cylvia DeBeltz (14th, 103). Ezra Chamberlin finished 16th with a 120.

The medalist was senior Kelby Anderson of International Falls, who shot an 80 and beat her nearest foe by six strokes.

• The East Range Conference girls competed on the Ely course Monday, with NRE placing eight strokes in back of team champion Rock Ridge to take second.

Koivisto finished with a nine-hole 47 to take fourth individually. She was seven strokes behind winner Tori Olson of North Woods.

Carena DeBeltz made the most of her home course advantage and placed seventh with a 50, while Danica Sundblad tied for ninth with a 53 and Maizy Sundblad took 12th at 54.

Ruby Milton wound up 16th with a 58 and both Chamberlin and Cylvia De-Beltz tied for 19th at 61.

• At a May 9 event at Rock Ridge, Maizy Sundblad led NRE by taking eighth with a 92.

She was followed by teammates Carena DeBeltz (11th, 94), Danica Sundblad (15th, 99), Koivisto (17th, 103) and Cylvia DeBeltz (19th, 104).

At an ERC event the same day at Hoyt Lakes, Homer was fourth with a 42, three strokes in back of winner Eli Devich of Rock Ridge.

Other NRE scores were as follows: 11. Sandy, 47; 11. Merriman, 47; 15. Ty Walker, 49; 16. Powell, 50; 29. Towley, 59; 36. Jesse Oelke, 72.
