Interview & photos by Pam Roberts
Alisha Urbas: “Grooming Porter and Larry here. I just have to finish his ear and then I am going to shave him down to ‘nakedness.” (Good thing I got you before...) “Exactly! Larry is actually named after my dad. It’s funny, this is not a relative client but when they got this little guy when he was a puppy, my sister and their son were friends. When my sister went over and said, “Hey my dad Larry would love that dog!” So they named the dog Larry.” (Tell me a little about you.). “I quit the Vet Clinic last end of June and started grooming and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I love dealing with dogs all day long, because they can’t talk back to me. They sometimes tell me things. We have conversations. What do you think Porter? I am working in the trailer right now and hopefully will work in the building in the yard up there when it gets finished. Hopefully in the next couple weeks I should be in there for Paws and Claws Grooming. Meghan Moravitz was a groomer in town and she is the one who pushed me into doing grooming. She used to work out of her parent’s place. They owned Beaver’s Liquor Store at the time. She had Plush Paws. Meghan got this trailer together and I’m not sure how long she groomed out of this trailer but she went back to working at the hospital. Otherwise not much else happening. Just a hairy life, cutting hair. Every day all day long. The hair never ends. People ask me, How’s life? I say: It’s hairy. 1104 East Main Street. By the Rec Center.”
Tom Huberty: “Working with Water Conservation Services. We’re going around locating all the water main breaks and hydrant leaks and everything that’s not coming up to the surface, out of the ground, for the City of Ely.” (How’s this one?). “This hydrant is leaking. I’ve listened to all the hydrants in town and have a good handle on all the ones that are leaking and areas that are leaking and we’ll be able to get that taken care of. The city will come through and do the repairs. We’re trying to control the water loss here. I’m from St. Paul. I came up here to work. This is my first time coming here actually I like it. It’s nice. I would definitely vacation up here, that’s for sure.”
Dale Franks: “You’ve got to get Alisha.” (He took me to her trailer where she was grooming two dogs. But then I interviewed Dale who I saw first. Dale: “I’m just doing some yard work and some yard chores today. Working on the hot tub and cleaning the filter and getting it all cycled and take a nice soak this evening. We’re been hot tubbing all winter. We’ve been pretty much leaving it run all winter. And then once the temperature starts to get a little bit warmer we’ll turn it into a ‘cool tub.’ We keep it around 80-85 and then in the summer it’s nice to come in when it’s a little hot outside. So it’s like a cool tub. We go back and forth between the sauna and the hot tub... We fire up the sauna every Sunday morning. It’s like a ritual now and pretty much let it go all day. So we’ll do three or four saunas and use the hot tub three or four times a week. Getting ready for the skeeter beater season. The mosquitos are going to be coming out here very very shortly. In fact, Alisha has been seeing a lot of flea and tick and stuff right now. It’s that time of year to get spraying and get materials down on the yards. Just living the dream in Ely. Getting excited for the All Class Reunion coming up this summer. It should be a big year for Ely this summer. That’s going to be exciting for the town and for the school. 100 year reunion.”
