Eli Olson scored the Timberwolves’ only win at Hibbing’s Doc Savage Invitational.
Olson continued a stellar junior season by taking first in the triple jump with a season- best of 39 feet, 1.5 inches at the high school boys track meet last Saturday.
The Wolves were fifth as a team at the seven-squad event, which included several larger schools, but Olson topped the field in the triple jump and headed a list of strong Ely outings.
“Eli had a really nice jump,” said Ely Head Coach Will Helms. “It was his second longest triple ever, a really solid good looking jump. And I think it was his best long jump ever taking seventh.”
Jumps were a strong suit for the Wolves on a cool, damp and drizzly day.
Junior Dylan Durkin was third in both the long jump 18-3) and high jump (5-8) and added a sixth-place finish in the 200 dash.
“Dylan had a great day,” said Helms. “Two thirds and a sixth and all were personal records. This is the first high jumper we’ve had at 5-8, probably going all the way back to Pat Heiman. And it was almost a three-way tie at 5-10.”
Senior Leo Stalmer was also a big scorer for the Wolves, taking third in the 110 hurdles (17.91) and fourth in the 300 hurdles (47.56).
Because of some absences, the Wolves had to reconfigure some relays, with Durkin joining Olson, Caleb Larson and Leo Stalmer on a four-by-400 quartet that took third in 3:53.48.
Junior Milo McClelland teamed up with freshmen Brooks Brenny and Oliver Hohenstein, and eighth-grader Wyatt Devine on a fourby- 800 relay group that took fourth in 9:27.38.
Hohenstein was seventh in the 1,600 run with a personal record of 5:21.79, and the Wolves put together a seventh- place four-by-200 relay with sophomores Noah Axlesson, John Schiltz and Jack Rintala joining freshman Mason Kurnava (2:01.62).
Olson teamed with Rintala, McClelland and Wyatt Mattson to place eighth in the four-by-100 relay (51.19). Other Ely top-12 finishes went to:
• 100 dash - 11. Larson, 12.75;
• 800 run - 12. Devine, 2:26.47;
• 1,600 run - 9. Brenny, 5:28.55;
• 3,200 run - 9. Kurnava, 12:33.34; 10. Blake Houde, 12:39.81; • Shot put - 10. Mattson 33-3;
• Long jump - 7. Olson, 17-7.
Ely collected 63 points ahead of Chisholm and Mt. Iron-Buhl but behind team champion Rock Ridge, Hibbing, Mesabi East and Hermantown.
“We were up against some Class AA schools, some strong and deep teams but I thought we stacked up pretty good against them,” said Helms.
The Wolves will compete in Tuesday’s Iron Range Conference meet at Rock Ridge, with subsection competition looming May 23 at Mesabi East.
