Molly Brophy first in 3,200
Ely’s high school girls track team stepped up in competition in its first action in nearly two weeks.
After a weather-related hiatus, the Timberwolves placed fifth among seven teams at Saturday’s rainy Doc Savage Invitational, held at Hibbing.
Ninth-grader Molly Brophy won the 3,200 meter run and had Ely’s top individual finish at a meet that attracted larger-school competition including Hermantown, Rock Ridge and the host Bluejackets.
Another ninth-grader, Kaylin Visser, took third with a throw of 86-8 in the discus and teammate Rachel Carter was next at 80-8 to give the Wolves a three-four finish in that event.
One of Ely’s youngest relays also had a big day as eighth-grader Mattie Lindsay teamed with Molly Brophy, seventh-grader Katy Brophy and sophomore Elsa Ellerbroek to place third in the four-by-800 relay (11:00.48).
Lindsay also had one of three other Ely fourth-place showings. She was fourth in the 1,600 (5:59.43), while senior Grace LaTourell had the same finish in the 200 dash (29.09).
Senior Sarah Visser, meanwhile, placed fourth in the triple jump at 29-6.
Sarah Visser also combined with Lindsay, Anna Larson and LaTourell to take fourth in the four-by-400 relay (4:41.73).

• Four-by-200 relay- 8. Chantel Ridings, Moskowitz, Addison Kannas, Nelson, 2:20.91;
• Four-by-400 relay - 6. Ohlhauser, Johnson, Isabella Macho, Dunn, 5:06.06;
• Shot put - 11. Carter, 24-10;
•Discus - 6. Sarah Visser, 78-6; 9. Addison Forsman, 70-2;
• High jump - 10. Selam Houle, 4-0;
• Long jump - 8. Forsman, 13-2; 10. Dunn, 12-5; 12. Sarah Visser, 12-4;
• Triple jump - 11. Forsman, 27-6; 12. Dunn, 26-8.5.
The Wolves’ meet at Mesabi East on Tuesday was rained out but they were scheduled to compete Thursday at Hibbing.
