On May 8, Roger Allen Beldo, 54, pleaded guilty to two counts of intentional second-degree murder for intentionally causing the death of Clifford and Christine Johnson at their Babbitt residence on October 28, 2023.
Following the murders, Beldo traveled to Duluth, MN, where he ultimately placed multiple emergency calls requesting help because he had done some “really bad things” and wanted to go to jail.
Beldo was arrested and ultimately confessed to murdering both victims. Prior to the murders, Beldo had lived with the Johnsons at their residence.
“While a guilty plea is an essential step towards legal closure and accountability, we recognize that it will not mitigate the emotional pain or lessen the sense of loss experienced by the loved ones of Clifford and Christine Johnson. Our thoughts go out to them,” said St. Louis County Attorney Kim Maki.
The St. Louis County Attorney’s Office thanks the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, the Babbitt Police Department, the Duluth Police Department, and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for their hard work and dedication in the investigation of this matter.
The case was prosecuted by assistant county attorneys Amber Pederson and Aaron Welch.
Sentencing is scheduled for August 5, 2024, at 2:30.
