Northeast Range/Ely figures to have one of the top high school girls golf teams in Section 7A, but a Class AA foe found out just how good NRE can be.
With Abby Koivisto and Maizy Sundblad carding identical nine-hole scores of 46, NRE topped area powerhouse Rock Ridge and owned the April 25 East Range Conference girls event at Hoyt Lakes.
Koivisto, a state meet competitor the last two seasons, tied for second in the meet along with Sundblad.
Carena DeBeltz was a stroke behind at 47, good for fifth overall.
Danica Sundblad fired a 52 to give NRE four golfers in the top-12, while teammates Ezra Chamberlin (17th, 61), Ruby Milton (22nd, 68) and Cylvia Debeltz (24th, 72) were next.
In boys action the same day, Ely senior Tommy Homer placed 17th with a 46.
Two other NRE golfers - seniors Wesley Sandy and Robert Towley - tied for 18th with a 47.
Lewis Powell recorded a 48 to take 23rd and Ty Walker finished 29th with a 51.
Also competing for NRE was junior Alex Merriman (38th, 54).
• Tuesday, the boys golfers had a home meet in Babbitt, with Homer taking fifth individually scoring a 41.
He was two strokes behind co-winners Eli Devich and Jace Kauppi of Rock Ridge.
NRE took fourth among give teams, and Powell shot a 47 to take 13th overall.
Walker and Towley tied for 20th with matching 50s, while teammates Chase Anderson and Sandy tied for 22nd at 51.
Jesse Oelke shot a 57 to place 29th and Merriman recorded a 60, good for 30th overall.
