Three straight ‘Ws’ for Ely softball

Ely’s high school softball team revved up its offense and is on a three-game winning streak.

The Timberwolves had four-run outbursts in both the fifth and sixth innings Tuesday, opening up a tight game and going on to a 12-2, six-inning thrashing of Two Harbors.

The home victory was the third straight for the Wolves, who also scored a 15-0 victory at Chisholm last week and are now 4-3 for the spring.

Against Two Harbors, some early threats fizzled but that changed in the fifth inning.

All the damage was with two outs, with Amelia Penke ripping a triple and Rylee Larsen following with a single, plating a run on both of the hits. Another run scored on a wild pitch while Clare Thomas doubled in a run to close out the frame.

Zoe MacKenzie’s two-run single was the highlight of a four-run sixth, and the game ended on Larsen’s sacrifice fly.

MacKenzie scored her third straight win in the pitching circle, striking out seven and tossing a four-hitter.

Amelia Penke finished three-for-three for the Wolves and Peyton Huntington had two hits with two runs scored MacKenzie recorded a shutout in the April 25 clash at Chisholm. The sophomore righthander allowed only two hits and reached double digits in strikeouts with 11.

The game went the full seven innings with the Wolves twice in the sixth and six times in the seventh to put things away Huntington was three-forthree with two runs scored for the Wolves, and Hannah Penke chipped in with two hits and two runs batted in. Grace Flynn singled, doubled and had two runs batted in, and Amelia Penke scored three runs The Wolves are at Cook County today and home games are coming up this week against International Falls (Monday), Chisholm (Tuesday) and North Woods (Friday).
