Ely’s Visser wins big at season-opening track meet
Kaylin Visser is picking up where she left off.
The Ely freshman captured both a section championship and a state meet berth a year ago in the discus, and she opened a new season with a dominant performance.
Visser easily won the discus competition at the season-opening April 11 Chisholm Early Bird, and she helped the high school girls track team to a fourth-place team finish.
Field events were an Ely strength at the event, which also served as Jill Ellerbroek’s debut as the Wolves’ head coach.
Visser threw the discus 97 feet, six inches to easily place first. The next-nearest competitor came in at 74-10. She also took fourth in the shot put (27-1).
Another Visser, senior Sarah, was second in the triple jump in 30-5 and was within a foot of the top spot.
Ely ninth-grader Lydia Shultz, meanwhile, placed second in the high jump (4-8).
Sophomore Addison Forsman also piled up points in the field events, by placing fifth in the long jump (13-9.5) and sixth in the triple jump (27-7).
Ely senior Grace La-Tourell, a returning section finalist, opened her final campaign by taking fourth in the 400 meters (1:06.75) The Wolves also bagged a fourth-place finish in the 300 hurdles, as eighth-grader Mattie Lindsay sprinted and jumped her way to a time of 57.05 seconds.
Ely’s highest-placing relay came in the four-by-800 as Kiarstin Eaton, Elsa Ellerbroek, Katy Brophy and Lindsay combined to take third in 11:37.65.
