Ely Police Report for February 2024

Arrests/Citations:

• An adult male was arrested at his residence for a felony warrant and transported to jail.

• Adult female arrested for Traffic-DUI-4th Degree-Controlled Substance.

• Adult female arrested for No proof of insurance, expired tabs, and Driving after Revocation.

• Adult male was arrested for DUI-2nd degree-Alcohol, 2nd degree .08 or more with 8 hours of stop, Uninsured vehicle, Driving after Revocation, No headlights, Probation Violation.

• Officer responded to a report of a shoplifter. The reporting party give the officer an itemized list of the stolen items, the voided transaction receipt, and the security footage. The reporting party provided the officer with the name and address of the suspect. Officer followed up with a citation and trespass on two juvenile males.

Calls/Complaints/Assists: • A ssist e d Babbit t Police with a DWI Arrest. Suspected drunk driver refused to exit the vehicle.

• Responded to a residence on a report of a medical. An elderly woman had fallen down the stairs.

• Report of a theft of a FedEx package from a front porch. The estimated value is $250. This case remains under investigation.

• Report of a juvenile male shoplifter at Zup’s. The juvenile will receive a trespass notice.

• Report of a gas drive off. Vehicle and driver were located.

• Responded to an alarm at the Ely Memorial High School covering the main office. Officers found the main door unlocked with several people playing basketball.

• Responded to a report of an accident in which a car hit a deer. The deer was deceased and the vehicle was drivable. The officer transported the deceased deer to the Wolf Center meat locker.

• Responded to the Ely Hockey Arena on a report that a skater had gone into the boards head first and was on the ice unresponsive. The skater eventually started to respond and complained of neck pain. The skater was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

• Responded to a call of a person who fell out of bed and hit their head. The person was responsive and not hurt. The ambulance declined to transport.

• Responded to a report that a cat was found in the car wash machinery. The cat was transported to the Ely Vet Clinic. The employees recognized the cat from being reported as lost, and would contact the owner.

• Responded to a call of someone having difficulty breathing. Assisted the ambulance with building entry. The caller refused transport.

• Responded to a report of a juvenile refusing to get into a vehicle. It was determined to be an argument between a father and daughter, which had been resolved. No assistance was needed.

• Responded to a call of a house filled with smoke from furnace exhaust. No flames were visible. The homeowner was waiting outside in her vehicle. Medics responded to check on her. Assisted in propping the doors open to vent the house. Superior Fuel arrived to fix the furnace.

• Responded to the Police Department to help the caller who was stuck in his Trailblazer. The dealership told him to call the police. The vehicle was covered in ice and the doors were frozen shut. With effort, the officer was able to break the ice and open the door.

• Assisted St. Louis County on an alarm call at The Wolf Center. The building was found secure. The keyholder did not need any further assistance.

• Responded to a call of a hit and run. The officer examined the damage and the requested security footage. When the footage was examined, it showed that the vehicle was not damaged at that location.

• Assisted medics on a call of an elderly male with pain to the back of the head. He was transported to the hospital.

• Responded to a call of someone yelling and passing out on a front porch. The homeowner told dispatch that the person had been there for 30 minutes. Officers located an adult male on the front porch laying under a swinging bench, covered in vomit. The male was able to explain that he lived with his brother and provide the brother’s name and address. Medics examined the male and deemed him safe to be released to a responsible person. The male was transported to his brother’s address and was released to him.

• Adult male requested a permit to purchase a handgun.

• Report received from VA-CEP on a report of possible elder abuse.

• Dispatched to meet a complainant who claimed that there was water dumped in his gas tank. The caller was also concerned that hundreds of vehicles keep driving past his house.

• Elderly female reported her concern about having her computer hacked and scammers trying to get her to wire them money. She had brought her computer to Voltz to have it checked. She knows not to wire money to anyone. She has notified her bank and also intends to change her phone number.

• Report received from VA-CEP on a report of possible elder abuse.

• Dispatched to assist an elderly person with a motorized scooter running low on battery.

• D ispat che d on a complaint of loud music. The caller was anonymous. The source was not located.

• While on patrol, officer noticed a vehicle in violation of calendar parking. The vehicle was tagged and it was determined that the owner had multiple previous unpaid calendar parking violations. The vehicle was towed for the outstanding violations.

• Assisted an adult with fingerprints for a background check.

• Assisted St. Louis County on a domestic involving physical violence.

• Assisted Babbitt Police on administering a breath test on a suspected drunk driver.

• While on patrol, officers came upon a vehicle that appeared to have crashed into the guardrail at Semers Beach. The vehicle was unoccupied. The owner of the vehicle was located. Officers assisted in pushing the vehicle off the guardrail. No disabling damage. Owner reported that she was turning around when the vehicle slipped into the guardrail.

• Dispatched to a suspected animal cruelty occurring. The dog was kenneled and appeared healthy and well fed. Officers returned on a later date and spoke to the owner of the dog. He was able to show the officer that the dog was well fed and watered. The dog appeared to be healthy and energetic.

• Adult female reported that one of her luggage bags had been stolen.

• Complaint from an adult female who reported suspicious behavior from an adult male she did not know.

• Received a call of possible suspicious activity at Ely Memorial High School. The school reported that AEOA bus had dropped an adult male at the front door.

• Dispatched to a call of unknown trouble.

• Officer responded to an alarm at the office of Ely Memorial High School. Found that the main doors were open and people were playing basketball.

• Officers took a report from and adult male who claimed that someone was damaging his snowmobile.

• Officers were dispatched to an alarm at the Ely Rec Center. An employee was present flooding the rink. He explained that kids had entered to change out of skates.

• Dispatched to a 911 hang up. The elderly resident invited the officer in and explained that she was having trouble with her TV. The officer was able to get her phone hung up, as well as getting her TV to work.

• Adult male applied for a permit to purchase a handgun.

• Responded speak to a merchant who had observed two women shoplifting. The manager wanted the two trespassed, but not charged with shoplifting.

• Assisted an adult female with fingerprints.

• Assisted an adult female with fingerprints.

• Adult female applied for a permit to purchase a handgun.

• Officer responded to a report of suspicious activity at a business. It was determined that two delivery persons had a conflict the prior week. The delivery driver circling the block advised he was avoiding contact with the other driver.

• Assisted an adult female with fingerprints.

• Received a report from Child Protection on a report of two possible children being neglected.

• Assisted an adult male with fingerprints.

• Officer responded to Ely HRA office to assist them with a civil standby while they served a tenant with some paperwork.

• Responded to a call of an unwanted person at a residence. The caller was an adult male and wanted an adult female removed as he didn’t want her there anymore. The female insisted she was too intoxicated to drive. The officer stood by while the female removed her belongings and placed them in her vehicle. Dispatch advised that the female had a warrant for her arrest. During transport, the female disclosed that she was having leg pain, chest pain, and trouble breathing. She further disclosed that she was pregnant. The female was brought to the hospital instead.

• Responded to a disturbance call at the Ely Hospital.

• Officer responded to a report of a trespasser. The adult female gathered her belongings and asked if the officer could give her a ride to her residence, which the officer did.

• Officers responded to a report of a noise complaint at a business. The complainant resides nearby. The noise was from the cleaning company’s generator. The company stated they would be finished within the hour. Officers drove past at the agreed time and found that the generator had been turned off.

• Officer responded of a report of threats at a residence.

• Officer responded to a report of a medical pendant activation. The adult female was located but was uninjured. Officer and medics assisted her back into the chair.

• Officer was dispatched to a store for two males that the manager wanted trespassed. Both males are adults. When full information is received the officer will assist in serving them with trespass noticed.

• Assisted an adult female with fingerprints.

• Officer dispatched to a 911 hang up. No answer on the call back. 911 was a general area, not address specific. No one was located.

• Vu l ner able a du lt information received on an adult male. A line of credit was opened in the vulnerable adult’s name. The account was closed.

• Officer responded to the hospital for a patient who was potentially combative. Officer spoke to the patient until the patient was calm.

• Officers were dispatched to a residence for a report of an argument between an adult male and adult female. The argument had been going on for hours. The male appeared intoxicated. It was determined that the argument was verbal. Officers advised the parties to keep their voices down.

• Officers responded to a residence to check the welfare of on elderly adult female. The elderly female opened the door and appeared healthy and energetic.

• Of f icers assisted St. Louis County with a domestic.
