The official 2024 Ice Out on Shagawa Lake was called at 6:08 p.m. on Sunday, April
7, 2024 by Grand Ely Lodge employees Bob and Katie.
The winner in this year’s contest was Kaia Kauppi of Minnetrista, MN with a guess of 4:17 p.m. on April 7. Kauppi wins $100 in Grand Ely Lodge Guest Bucks.
Second prize was a $50 Ely Echo gift certificate which goes to David Beauclair of Ely who guessed 4 p.m. on April 7.
Taking the third prize,
$25 Grand Ely Lodge Bucks was Kiersten Schoonover of Ely who guessed 3:30 p.m. on April 7.
Congratulations to the winners and thanks to the over 210 people who entered the free contest this year. Entries also come from patrons of Grand Ely Lodge.
April 7 is a month earlier than last year’s date of May
8 which was two days before the 2022 ice out and six days earlier than the ice out date in 2021.
Dating back to 1940, ice out on Shagawa has ranged between March 27 (2012) and May 22 (195).
Ice out is official when a boat could leave Grand Ely Lodge’s dock and cross to the north side of the lake, chunks of ice notwithstanding.
SHAGAWA LAKE ICE OUT Joe Folio Sr. kept ice out records from 1940 until his death in 2002.
Records during the war years,
1942 through 1945, were kept by his brother Ricardo Folio.
