Jasper Johnston closed out his collegiate skiing career at a series of events in Duluth.
The former Ely Timberwolf standout, who has competed in both NCAA and U.S. National events during a decorated skiing career, is a senior at Michigan Tech and was part of a Huskies team that took part in the SuperTour Finals and Spring National Championships from March 21-26.
At that event, Johnston was 33rd overall in the classic sprint and joined teammate Mikkel Katla on a team sprint that took 14th overall and fifth among college teams.
Johnston had a standout performance in the qualifier, taking 10th overall.
“I was super pumped with how my last races went on Sunday,” said Johnston, via a news release from Michigan Tech. “I was able to put together the best sprint qualifier I ever had. It was pretty awesome to end my college career with a team sprint event and be able to ski with the best in the country in the A final.”
Earlier in the season, Johnston helped lift the Huskies to another NCAA Central Region title by taking seventh in the freestyle race and ninth in the classic.
A forestry major, Johnston moved on to Michigan Tech after standing out for several seasons as part of the Ely Nordic Wolves.
As a high school athlete, Johnston was a four-time all-state honoree in Nordic Skiing and his prep career included section individual titles in both his junior and senior seasons.
He took the step up to the collegiate ranks and stepped right in at Michigan Tech, earning recognition for the Huskies and taking part in the Gitchi Gami Games, which are part of the U.S. domestic racing circuit with top-level professionals and also going on to the U.S. Senior Nationals in Utah.
