The 3 o’clock hour, Monday, April 1, 2024

Judy Klun: “I am just out on a beautiful sunny day with a blue sky walking my daughter’s dog Fanny and enjoying spring coming soon. It’s beautiful out today! I had a good winter. Did a little bit of traveling and had some relatives come to visit and just enjoyed lots of family time. My sister is coming in to town in not too long and I am looking forward to that. She lives in the Chicago area. We just are going to enjoy some lake time together. That is if everything thaws out here. We’ll see, because that’s always a mystery. I’m just glad I’m living in Ely. I think it’s such a wonderful place and I enjoy all the people and life is good here.”

Jim Quigley and his dog Hubble: “My mother was a Lomasney. She grew up in Section 30. I’m kind of from here. I did live here I guess when I was about two years old, briefly. And my dad went back to the service. He was a veterinarian and became a food inspector for the Army so he was a career officer and we traveled all over the world. So that’s kind of where I grew up. Mostly in the west and the south. Hot places. Snow was always a novelty to us. I lived in the Boston area for many years after college. I came back out here, I don’t remember the exact year, to help out my folks who retired to the Twin Cities area. And I have kind of been somewhere in Minnesota ever since. I came back to Ely because of the family connection. As kids we always came here in the summers for vacation from pretty much wherever we were. It just stuck. We went fishing and canoeing. I kind of like fishing. My brother really likes to fish but he’s not here. He’s in Pittsburgh. He comes up every summer. We are going to go this way and cut through the secret entrance...”

Dan Kirkman and his dog Maggie: “I was just out visiting out by Burntside River at the family homestead. They got a place out in the country there and I was just visiting. Brought the dog out there and let the dog run a little bit and shoveled a little bit of the snow that was left to shovel. I live right here at Zenith Apartments. I’ve lived here about two and a half years. Came from out by Burntside River. I lived at the family homestead. I’m retired. I used to work for U.S. Steel. I was disabled for years too. Doing ok now. Just taking care of my dog now. But I used to live out there by Burntside River but my brother and his kids took it over as a family retreat and with me living there it was kind of crowded for them to visit. I wasn’t sole owner. I used to live there with my dad but he passed away. It’s alright here at Zenith. It’s quiet. It’s nice. I was out at the recycling place bringing the recyclables out to the recycling place out by the softball courts behind the cemetery. Now I will probably go inside and fix something to eat. Ely is great. It’s peace of mind here a bit. Yeah. But it can be somewhat boring. You’ve got to find things to do.”

Morgan Lassi: “It’s been going pretty good. I am currently walking toward work, listening to music. I work at Dairy Queen. I started there about two weeks ago so I am still pretty new. I’m a junior and school is going pretty good. I’m in band which is my favorite class. I play baritone. I like it. I have a pretty big solo in the next concert which I am pretty excited about. I think it is May 21st. I’ve just been working and going to school. My brother just got his license a little bit ago. So we were talking about going to a concert maybe in September.” (That’s wonderful to get to do things with your brother.) “Yeah. It’s pretty fun.”
