Timberwolves’ leading scorer named to Arrowhead team again
Even a young and rebuilding Ely Timberwolves team had its moments this winter - thanks in big part to Jack Davies.
The sophomore guard was one of two returning regulars for a boys basketball team that had no seniors in its starting five, and one of the area’s most prolific scorers.
Opposing coaches noticed, and they named Davies to the All-Arrowhead Conference Team for a second straight season.
Davies is a repeat selection, and the only Ely honoree on a 15-member squad that includes the entire starting five from conference champion Cherry, which won the State Class A title last weekend in Minneapolis.
While Davies remained a deadly three-point shooting threat, his sophomore year was also defined by progress in other aspects of his game, according to Ely Head Coach Tom McDonald.
“Jack had a solid year for us and he became more of a scorer for us rather than just a shooter,” said McDonald. “He attacked the basket much more than he did his freshman year and he went to the free throw line 121 times, which led the team. ”
Davies was a big-time scorer for the Wolves, passing the 1,000-point career threshold this season and averaging 20.2 points per game for the season.
He had several games where he took over, rattling off 20 or more points in a half and either spurring Wolves wins or keeping his team in the game against more experience opponents.
Davies, who also averaged 3.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game, teamed with junior Caid Chittum to provide the bulk of Ely’s offense this season. The Wolves finished 11-16 overall.
While Davies gained All-Arrowhead acclaim for a second straight year, the competition was stiffer this year given the addition of more teams to the league and the presence of Cherry, which in unprecedented fashion put five members on the team - including University of Minnesota-bound senior Isaac Asuma.
“It was nice to see him get on the team as it was loaded with talent this year,” said McDonald. “Adding a few teams to the conference made it more difficult to get on the team. Also having all five starters from Cherry get on made it hard for others to get on the team.”
