The final entries are in and now we have a foot of snow to add to the equation for the Ely Echo/Grand Ely Lodge Shagawa Lake Ice Out Contest.
Entries closed on Wednesday, March 27.
One day later would have been ice out according to James Toljan of Winton who picked 3:30 p.m.
“Yippeee whatever date we all WIN when ice departs” said Mary Garbutt of Plymouth, MN who sent in March 31 at noon.
No foolin’ said Kathy Champa of Ely for April 1 at 8 a.m.
A pair of April 2 guessers, Ruthanne Fenske of Ely at 2 p.m. and Sharon Gresly of Babbitt at 3:20 p.m.
And a trio of April 4 selections, Steve Korbel of Lonsdale, MN at 9:08 a.m., Lola Garbutt of Plymouth, MN at 11:30 a.m. and Heather Holthaus of Ely at 4:04 p.m.
Ice out will happen on April 5 at 11:30 a.m. according to Emily Seliskar of Ely.
Brian Johnson of Ely likes April 5 at 9:46 a.m.
April 7 was a popular choice including Maddie Hill of Ely at 9:20 a.m., Diane Kromer of Ely at 11:27 a.m., and Kiersten of Ely April 7 at 3:30 p.m.
His wife likes April 5 but Craig Seliskar of Ely thinks the ice will go out on April 8 at 3:08 p.m.
Could it all happen on April 9? Two people this week think so, Pee Wee Maki of Ely at 11:25 a.m. and Anne Johnson of Ely at 12:05 p.m.
Here’s some April 12 guessers: Brooke Johnson of Lonsdale, MN at 6 a.m., Steve Smrekar of Ely at 10 a.m., Greg Jonas of Ely at 11:45 a.m., Tiffany Zemke of Ely at 12:12 p.m. and Christine Kolinski of Ely at 3 p.m.
Will April 13 be the lucky day? At least two people thinks so, Emma of Ely at 2:10 p.m. and Elyite Heidi Lamers who lives in Washington and picked 3:14 p.m.
Tax day could the ice out in 2024 contest, so says Anne Mackie of Ely who picked April 15 at 6 a.m.
Checking the calendar and going with April 16 was Jane Josefson of Bemidji, MN at 9:10 a.m. and Mary Laramee of Ely at 1:21 p.m.
Those who like April 17 include Carmen Nelson of Ely at 10 a.m. Lindi Zemke of Ely at 10:36 a.m. Braden Jonas of Ely at 1:16 p.m. and Pepper Asche of Plymouth, MN at 3:30 p.m.

And our last entry by date came in from Makayla of Ely, May 8 at 12 p.m.
Ice out is official when a boat could leave Grand Ely Lodge’s dock and cross to the north side of the lake, chunks of ice notwithstanding.
Times which are duplicate: only the earliest entry wins.
