We went from 60 degrees to six degrees but there’s still plenty of optimists sending in their guesses to the Ely Echo/ Grand Ely Lodge Shagawa Lake Ice Out Contest.
Entries are being accepted by email at events@elyecho. com until Wednesday, March 27.
The earliest guess this week came from Justin Zemke of Ely who went with March 25 at 12:30 p.m.
Selecting March 27 was Jeff Nelson of at 2:51 p.m.
Terri Rank of Crossville, TN told us March 28 at 1:15 p.m.
Mel Flood of Tower likes March 30 at 11:11 a.m.
J. A. Marayelle “Judith” of Minnetonka, MN predicted March 31 at 12:15 p.m.

It’ll be ice out at least a month after the contest closes according to Bernard Red Brula of Franklin Park, IL who went with April 26 at 12:45 p.m. and Lynn Cox of Chanhassen, MN at 2 p.m.
Using her local knowlege, Nikki Seliskar of Ely has April 27 at 11:27 a.m. circled.
Nobody picked April 28, but two picked the next day, Dick Sparks of Las Vegas, NV at 2:30 p.m. and Jim Grahek of Albertville, MN at 3:29 p.m.
Those Las Vegas folks know how to gamble so look at the entries from Martie Sparks of Las Vegas, NV on April 30 at 7:20 a.m. and Peter Tozer of Las Vegas, NV on May 1 at 7 p.m.
Our pessimist this week likes the great date of May 7, Tomi McDonald of Ely sent in 9:50 a.m. that day.
Ice out is official when a boat could leave Grand Ely Lodge’s dock and cross to the north side of the lake, chunks of ice notwithstanding.
Times which are duplicate: only the earliest entry wins.
There are no duplicate prizes. It may pay to submit your guess as early as possible, but only one guess is allowed per person. Each entry MUST have a complete name, address and phone number as well as the date and time of day for the guess. Incomplete entries are thrown out.
Earliest correct entry wins. First Prize: $100 Grand Ely Lodge Guest Bucks. Second prize is $50 Ely Echo gift certificate, third prize: $25 Grand Ely Lodge Bucks. Employees of Grand Ely Lodge and the Ely Echo are not eligible to win prizes.
One entry per person, no more than three entries per single household application by email.
