Hiller leaving Ely HRA for Chisholm

CH I SHOLM—T h e Chisholm Housing and Redevelopment Authority has hired Joe Hiller, the current director of the Ely HRA, as its new executive director.

“I’m just really excited about the opportunity to bring my experience and my energy to the new HRA,” Hiller said. I’m just excited to have the opportunity to make the Chisholm HRA stand out in the community.”

The Chisholm HRA Board of Directors, at a special meeting on March 19 unanimously voted to hire Hiller and has approved his contract, according to Chisholm HRA Board Chair Roberta Landacre. Hiller is anticipated to begin his new position on April 22, the effective date of his three-year contract.

Hiller is filling a vacancy created when Jerome Culliton, the HRA’s former director resigned on Dec. 1, 2023, citing a hostile work environment as a factor.

In a phone interview on Thursday, Hiller said as part of his second interview, he had an opportunity to tour the Chisholm HRA properties and is aware of what he’s getting into. And when asked if he was aware of the Chisholm HRA’s issues including a low score in 2022 on a real estate assessment center (REAC) inspection from HUD, Hiller acknowledged he’s aware of the authority’s “troubled status in HUD’s eyes.”

“I look up to the challenge to raise that standard and higher,” Hiller said.

“I had an opportunity to reach out with HUD staff I work with at the Ely HRA and made aware of transition,” Hiller said. “They are sad that I’m leaving this organization and thrilled that I’m going to Chisholm.”
