Erika Mattson’s college athletics journey ended with postseason acclaim.
The 2020 Ely High School graduate won a spot on the All-Upper Midwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball team.
Mattson, a senior forward at the University of Wisconsin- Superior, won second team All-UMAC honors.
The recognition comes on the heels of a big winter for the Yellowjackets, and Mattson’s best season in a UWS uniform.
Mattson played in all 27 of the Yellowjackets’ games while starting 20. She played 628 minutes, just over 22 per contest, while scoring 232 points at a clip of 8.6 points per game.
Among starters she finished third with a field goal percentage of 39.6 and third with 24 three pointers made. Defensively she grabbed 35 offensive and 62 defensive rebounds for 97 total, good for fifth-best on the team.
In January, Mattson won player of the week honors for the UMAC. That came after a weekend in which she sparked back-to-back UWS wins with 18 and 19-point outings, including a fivefor- six three-point shooting effort against Martin Luther.
The Yellowjackets finished the season with a record of 18-9 and a conference record of 13-1, entering the UMAC Tournament as the top and advancing to the championship game.
Mattson has also been part of the softball team at UWS the last three years and was part of a Yellowjacket team that reached the NCAA Division III tournament and won the UMAC in 2023.
She is majoring in biology and chemistry at UWS, and moved on to the school after earning numerous all-conference honors in basketball, softball and volleyball for the Timberwolves.
