Morse board hears pitch for doggie hotel

The Morse board will look to hold a special meeting on a proposed doggie hotel to be located east of Ely.

Paige Maystadt said she is looking to purchase a property at 1293 Highway 169 on 6.24 acres.

There would be three yards for the dogs which would be outside from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the week and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. She said barking can be controlled.

The board asked about a neighboring property that has around 40 dogs. The town board will look into that property’s required permits.

Board member Terry Soderberg said a neighbor across the road had already complained about additional dogs in the area.

Soderberg suggested a public meeting be held on the proposal.

Maystadt said a timeline to get everything up and running would take a year.

Cersine said people who live in the township enjoy the peace and quiet and that he supported a meeting to discuss the project.

Paige also said an Elybased kennel may be closing in the future increasing the need for a business like what she is proposing.

There was discussion on the need for a place for people to bring their dogs whether on an hourly drop spot or longer.

Maystadt said may be more of a daycare to start with for people who need temporary dog watching.

Soderberg said the board is not against the facility, it’s just the location of it. He said he believes there will be lots of people using it. Berrini said it would be a great idea to have this in the area.

A public meeting will be scheduled in April.

In other business Soderberg noted the lack of snow is going to be a hit to the Ely area lodging tax. He said there is still ongoing discussion with Lake County which only wants to pay $120,000 a year. He said the board is pushing to get the full three percent funding. He said there is also a push to get a portion of Lake County’s one percent lodging tax monies for entertainment used in the Ely area as well.

In other business the board:

• Heard that Treehouse Broadband’s grant application was not approved by the state in the latest round of funding. Owner Isaac Olson said while the community and project plan was good, project costs were too high compared to competing applications.

• Set the next board meeting for 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9.

• Heard from board member Bob Berrini that the Ely Area Ambulance Service has not needed any additional funding recently.

• Received $24,971 in taconite tax production funds, down slightly from the regular $25,000.

• Noted the local board of appeal and equalization meeting will be held on May 7 on 9 a.m. at the Morse town hall.
