With temperatures hitting 60 degrees in Ely, it’s turning into a very interesting Ely Echo/Grand Ely Lodge Shagawa Lake Ice Out Contest.
Entries are being accepted by email at events@elyecho. com by March 27.
Guessing the ice will be out before the contest entry period is over was Becky Hanson with March 20 at 2:30 p.m.
A pair of March 21 pickers with Sheila Kauppi of East Bethel, MN at 2:15 p.m. and Ely’s Rick Ellis at 8 a.m.
Dennis Svendsen of Rockford, MN selected March 23 at 2 p.m.
Paul Kauppi of East Bethel, MN told us March 24 at 2 p.m.
Formerly from Down Under and now from Ely, Brad Pearse used his worldwide knowledge to pick March 27 at 7:05 a.m.
Picking the same day was Steve Meskan of Chisago City, MN at 4 p.m.
Kim Hill of Gilbert, MN went with March 28 at 3:05 a.m.
The last day of the month could be lucky for Mike Murray of Sartell, MN who chose March 31 at 3:09 p.m.
The first of three April 1 guessers was Leslie Hutchings of St. Johns, FL with 11:44 a.m. Dual resident Frank Decker of Bear Island Lake/ Glendora, CA picked 3 p.m. and Cheryl Hatfield of Duluth, MN says 3:30 p.m.

We received April 19 guesses from Ely’s Tony Bartovich at 10 a.m. and Holly Mathers at 2:22 p.m. From Lawrenceburg, IN was Mike Silbernagel’s pick of April 19 at 3 p.m.
Ice out will be on April 20 at 6:55 a.m. according to Judy Steckbauer of Oshkosh, WI April 20.
Another pair using their hometown info to go with April 21 were Sandy Nickolson at 9:23 a.m. and Bryan Cole at 12:15 p.m.
April 22 will be the winning day according to Joann Grahek of Coon Rapids, MN at 12:15 p.m. along with Brian Tibble of Plainfield, IL at 3 p.m.

Ice out is official when a boat could leave Grand Ely Lodge’s dock and cross to the north side of the lake, chunks of ice notwithstanding.
