The 3 o’clock hour, Wednesday, March 6, 2024

Molly and Wendy Lindsay with their dog Finn: Molly: “I was chasing my dog down the street. She ran away. Things have been going pretty well. I am in Fiddler on the Roof and I just finished Frozen. That was pretty fun.” Wendy: “And you are on the robotics team with competition last weekend.” (Oh, what was your robot like or what did it have to do?). Molly: “Basically for our robot we have to shoot a bunch of discs into either an amp or a speaker. You can find all the matches online.” Wendy: “There were 120 teams in Duluth who competed against each other. They finished fifth. they did a good job.” Molly: “You can watch online on the Blue Alliance.com and see the videos of all the matches and the scoring and watch the qualification matches of all the top teams. It was really fun. It’s for STEMS.(Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics.” Molly: “ Fiddler on the Roof starts Thursday, March 14. We have most of the family in there. I am in there, and all three girls and my dad (Wayne Marshall.). My mom will be watching... Today I am just chasing kids around and running after dogs.”

Gary Surla: “I am from Virginia. I do water treatment like water conditioning in houses and buildings. If you have bad water I fix it or I repair the unit like I did today at the church. The name of the company is Hague Quality Water Conditioning from Virginia. I’m done for the day and heading back. I have to stop back to Virginia where I have a couple calls. Then I’ll go home. I come to Ely off and on. I’ve owned the business for 40 years. I do quite a bit up here and past into Winton where I do water filtration.”

Bruce Koski: “I was just doing some work at the church (Grace Lutheran.) We had some minor maintenance to do and stuff. I’m retired and live here in Ely, I was a stationary engineer for WLSSD in Duluth. I took care of the heating system, basically. Boilers and all that kind of stuff. Pulled big wrenches. I worked there for 38 years and retired up here. I retired in 2014 and been up here ever since. I enjoy Ely for Ely. I grew up in Esko which is about the same size community. I just like it here. Small town. I’m going to go home and get changed and come back to church.” (Good thing he came back. I forgot to get his photo and by the time I lost him, tried to find him and did not, got one more interview, and he was back at the church with his wife Deb. Whew... and I got his photo...)

Natalie Bermel and her dog Zeke: “I’m going on a walk with my dog here. His name is Zeke. I went to school today then I went to archery. It’s going pretty good. Today we shot 3D so we basically shot foam animals. We shoot in the basement of the NAPA building. They line the animals up and we shoot archery from there. I actually just started this year. My sister Jenna did it last year. I thought that sounded pretty fun so I decided to try it this year. Zeke is a hunting dog.” (Will you use your archery skills for hunting?) “I don’t know if I ever will. But we do tournaments so you go different places, travel around and compete against other schools. Our season is going to be done at the end of March. We have another tournament coming up I think it’s State and then there are a few more tournaments after that, Nationals and places around the world if you are good enough. We better get going...”
