Ely’s high school Knowledge Bowl team wound up fifth at the Class A state meet and is moving on to state.
The four-member group, which won the Section 7A title last month, was fifth among 14 teams in the Class A division at the Minnesota State Knowledge Bowl Competition, held at Brainerd April 10-11.
It was the first time an Ely Knowledge Bowl team has qualified for state, and the group demonstrated its teamwork and quick-thinking skills while earning state medals.
Team members are juniors Makenzi Huntington, Edward Swapinski and Jesse Grant, and eighth-grader Aria Gregerson. Team advisor/coaches are Madeline Olson and Karl Kubiak.
There were 48 teams that qualified for the state meet in various enrollment divisions, among over 1,000 teams that competed throughout the state this year.
Competition was fierce, with a written round of 50 questions taking place Thursday, April 10, after which Ely was ranked second. The following day, there were five oral rounds with 45 questions each.
Questions follow high school curriculum, with subject areas including math, history and science among others.
The team needed to raise funds to help cover expenditures for the state tournament trip, and the group offered its thanks to the Ely Educational Foundation for sponsoring our season, as well as those who contributed to fundraisers for state.
