Ely Echo Shagawa Lake Ice Out Contest for 2025 underway, entries must be sent in via email

The Ely Echo Shagawa Lake Ice Out Contest is now underway, sponsored by Grand Ely Lodge.

Entries are now being accepted, by email only, at [email protected] by March 25.

We had a bunch of entries this week including the optimistic (or pessimistic) Houde brothers.

Bryce Houde of WintonMN picked March 26 at 2 p.m. awhile his brother Blake Houde picked March 31 at 10:30 a.m.

No fooling, Mary Laramee of Ely likes April 1 at 1 p.m.

Raeleigh Lavalle of Isanti, MN picked April 3 at 3 p.m.

Bob Murphy of Roseville, MN sent in April 6 at 6:28 a.m.

Debra Lackey of Ely believes in April 9 at 12:30 p.m.

A pair of April 10 pickers, Otwell Derr of Longmont, CO at 11:53 a.m. and Karin Beauclair of Ely at 4:15 p.m.

Tax day is the right day for Bill Lannom of Grinnell, IA who said April 15 at noon.

A trio likes April 17, Rosemarie Mobilia Vejtasa of Ely at 1:17 p.m., Mike Kostecky of Andover, MN a t 10: 0 7 a.m.; and JoAnn Derr of Longmont, CO at 10:59 a.m.

April 18 was the right date for Bonnie Borglund of Lakeville, MN at 1:03 p.m.; LaVerne Ellis of Ely at 11:30 a.m. and Rolley Hull of Brooklyn Park, MN at 2:30 p.m.

Longtime whistle blower (as in high school sports official) Tony Bartovich of Eveleth went with April 19 at 10 a.m. as did Rileigh Lavalle of Isanti, MN at 12:05 p.m., Ben Kubez of Ely at 7:35 p.m. and James Enros at April 19 at noon.

A pair of 4/20 guessers, Sandy Quast of Hayward, WI at 2 p.m. and Mary Pat O’Halloran of Ely at 2:47 p.m.

Keith Appleberry of Ely looked out his window and went with April 21 at 10 a.m.

Same day different time for Miranda Quast of Isanti, MN who picked noon.

Goin with April 22 were Joann Grahek of Coon Rapids, MN at 1:10 p.m.; Carol Lynn Cox of Chanhassen, MN at 10 a.m.; Connie R. Olson of Hills, MN at 2:15 p.m. and Kathleen Bird of Saginaw, MN at 6:40 p.m.

Two choices for April 23, Carlos Santos of Charlottesville, VA at 2:30 p.m. and Anne Grigon of Ely at 3:30 p.m.

Ice out will be on April 24 according to Chico Hillstrom of Ely who said 1 p.m.; Joyce Bernard of Mt. Airy, MD at 3:21 p.m.; Todd and Karen Lucachick at 4:24 p.m. and Terry Cooper of Ely at 5:25 p.m.

April 25 is the right date for Dwayne Meier of Winton at 10:30 a.m. and Doug Witt of Ely at 2:30 p.m.

Kevin Lavalle of Isanti, MN went with April 26 at noon while Paul Forsman of Ely sent in April 27 at 3:27 p.m. Rochelle R. Olson of Sioux Falls, SD picked April 27 at 4:45 p.m.

Steve Rhode likes April 28 at 7:05 a.m. and Marlene Appleberry of Ely said April 28 at 8 a.m.

Vicki Wagner of Ely knows ice out will be on April 29 at 11:13 a.m.

Gary Frieden of Greenfield, IN also likes April 29 but at 5:15 p.m.

Waiting for May Day was Kathy Shanahan of Sister Bay, W at 12:59 p.m. and Jennifer Petersmeyer of Savage, MN at 9:03 p.m.

Clifford Bird of Saginaw, MN emailed May 2 at 1:40 p.m. and Donna Meier of Winton sent in May 2 at 5:02 p.m.

Lori McNamara of Stillwater, MN told us May 3 at 6:25 a.m.

David Petersmeyer of Savage, MN likes May 5 at 10:37 a.m. while Rick Ellis of Ely said same day but at noon.

Traci Muchineripi of Minneaplolis has a feeling for May 7 at 3 p.m.

Fishing opener picks went to Nancy Kirkpatrick of Saybrook, IL on May 10 at 10:15 a.m. and Yevi Muchineripi of Minneapolis, MN on May 10 at noon Ice out is official when a boat could leave Grand Ely Lodge’s dock and cross to the north side of the lake, chunks of ice notwithstanding.

Times which are duplicate: only the earliest entry wins. There are no duplicate prizes. It may pay to submit your guess as early as possible, but only one guess is allowed per person. Each entry MUST have a complete name, address and phone number as well as the date and time of day for the guess. Incomplete entries are thrown out.

Earliest correct entry wins. 1st Prize: $100 Grand Ely Lodge Guest Bucks. Second prize is $50 Ely Echo gift certificate, third prize: $25 Grand Ely Lodge Bucks. Employees of Grand Ely Lodge and the Ely Echo are not eligible to win prizes.

One entry per person, no more than three entries per single household application by email. You can email your best guess (date and time), name and mailing address with the email subject labeled “Ice out.” Send to: [email protected] Entries also come from patrons of Grand Ely Lodge.

Entries are published in the Ely Echo one time in the contest and remain on file for the contest period.
