Gillson charged with assault, violating terms of probation

Month after plea bargain, Elyite arrested again

An Ely man is back in jail and charged with domestic assault - barely a month after he pleaded guilty to two felonies.

Jason Gillson, 50, was listed on the St. Louis County Jail roster Wednesday after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend and prevented her from calling 911 during a Feb. 8 incident at his Boundary Street home.

Gillson was later arrested and charged with two gross misdemeanors - including one for domestic assault.

He is also accused of violating terms of his probation.

In January, Gillson reached a plea bargain with county prosecutors and convicted on felony charges of fourth-degree assault on a peace officer and second-degree arson.

Those charges were in connection with a 2023 incident in Ely when Gillson also led officers on a high-speed chase, and he received a one-year prison sentence that was stayed for five years of supervised probation.

Gillson was also sentenced to nine months in county jail, beginning in April with the allowance that he could be released or time to serve may be waived, if he completed chemical dependency programming and any other programming as well as an updated diagnostic assessment.

But according to a criminal complaint filed by the Ely Police Department, Gillson broke the terms of his probation last week.

On the evening of Feb. 8, officers responded to an assault call in which the alleged victim said Gillson threw her to the ground and had a handgun in his waistband.

Scott Kochendorfer, an officer with the Ely Police Department, located the alleged victim, who said Gillson threatened “to smash in her head.”

According to the criminal complaint, Gillson had contacted the woman and invited her over to his home, where an argument ensued. Gillson is alleged to have thrown the victim on the floor and ripped her jacket.

The woman told police that she told Gillson she was calling 911 but Gillson prevented her from doing son.

An Ely officer later located Gillson near his home. He told police that he was in a relationship with the woman, and that she picked a fight, flipped her plate of food and kicked a container of marbles across the floor. Gillson denied touching the woman and denied interfering with her ability to use her phone.

Officers did not locate a firearm but observed that the woman’s jacket was ripped.

Both gross misdemeanor counts filed against Gillson, one for domestic assault and one for impeding a 911 call, carry maximum sentences of a year in prison and a $3,000 fine.
