Suspensions, fines issued for illegally selling edibles to minors
The city of Ely has penalized three area businesses that were found to have sold cannabinoid edibles to minors.
None took part in a public hearing scheduled Tuesday, and all three were issued three-day license suspensions and $300 fines during the subsequent city council meeting.
Ely Liquor, Mike’s Liquor and Stinky Pete’s were found to have illegally sold edibles during a December compliance check conducted by city police.
Police Chief Chad Houde said two of the three businesses - Ely Liquor and Mike’s Liquor - had already paid their fine.
During a brief discussion Tuesday, city officials said the remaining business must pay its fine in order to retain its license.
The three-day license suspension began Wednesday for both Ely Liquor and Mike’s Liquor while Stinky Pete’s suspension was to begin Thursday, the next scheduled day the business was open.
All three businesses are allowed to remain open to sell other products.
The employees who sold the edibles to an underage buyer engaged by the Ely Police Department also face fines of $500.
Houde told council members that police sent an underage person to 10 licensed businesses that were open on Dec. 20. Of those, seven businesses asked for identification and were in compliance while the three businesses found guilty did not.
