The Ely Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for four annual awards to recognize and celebrate the commitment of the extraordinary people and businesses of the Ely area.
Award recipients will be recognized at this year’s Celebrate Ely networking event scheduled for April 3.
Local legend Jackpine Bob Cary epitomized the spirit that is still alive in Ely today. Author, artist, photographer, wilderness guide, and ski racer Cary helped put Ely on the map when he ran for president as an Independent Fisherman’s Party representative. He is remembered for his passion for life and his ability to have fun.
Cary was an outspoken community representative. He loved Ely and constantly worked to promote it through his writings, artistic works, and the stories he shared with anyone who would listen. He was willing to serve and give time to support Ely and the surrounding area.
In 2009, the Ely Chamber of Commerce established an award in Cary’s honor: Jackpine Bob Cary Community Spirit Award.
The award aims to recognize an individual or group for their unselfish giving and promotion of Ely, which has positively impacted the Ely area and tourism. The award may or may not be given annually.
Criteria include eligible individuals, groups, or organizations who are enthusiastic promoters of Ely and all it has to offer and are actively involved in projects and activities that significantly contribute to the quality of life in the community and the promotion of Ely as a great place to visit.
The Ely Chamber of Commerce wishes to recognize businesses that go above and beyond to foster an environment of community improvement and support.
The owners or managers of these companies demonstrate good business citizenship through an ongoing commitment to helping and supporting the community. They monetarily support and/or share their or their staff’s time and talent for the betterment of the Ely area.
There are several ways these businesses demonstrate their commitment to the community including financial contributions, sponsorships of events, volunteer work (owners or their staff), donations of services, facilities, or other resources, and involvement in community organizations or activities.
Criteria for the Good Neighbor Business Award include: any for-profit or non-profit business is eligible, nominees do not have to be members of the Ely Chamber of Commerce, nominees should be actively involved through time commitment or financial support of projects and activities that significantly contribute to the quality of life in the community.
For the Good Citizen Volunteer of the Year Award, the Chamber is looking for someone who is always stepping forward to assist others. Their work may include assisting neighbors, serving as active members of area clubs and organizations, or just lending a hand.
The fourth award is the Excellence in Customer Service Award. Employees are the “face” of every business. Whether it is a service or retail business, employees impact customer and guest experiences.
The Chamber would like to hear about an employee who personifies excellence in customer service.
If you would like to nominate an individual or business for one of these awards, please include a short statement (150-500 words) of why you feel they deserve recognition.
The Chamber asks that the nomination identifies specific, recent achievements that describe the nominee’s work and impact on the community. Submit to Ely Chamber of Commerce, 1600 E. Sheridan St, Ely, or email [email protected]. Nominations will be accepted through Feb. 3.
