The late, great hockey Coach Herb Brooks once said that “great moments are borne from great opportunity.”
That’s what we have before us.
We have a great opportunity to finally turn the page on the chaos of the administration of President Joe Biden and enact policies that will help the American people thrive once again. This is a big moment for our country and our region, and I do not take it lightly.
If this past election taught us anything, it’s that the American people want secure borders. They are tired of seeing illegal immigrants deplete our nation’s resources. They are horrified by stories of American civilians killed by smuggled drugs and Venezuelan gang members. President-elect Donald Trump knows this, and within hours of taking the oath of office, he will sign executive orders to prevent dangerous criminals and contraband from entering this country.
Congress will then follow suit by passing comprehensive legislation that will secure our southern and northern borders. In the 118th Congress, the House passed the strongest border- security legislation in American history. Now that Republicans are set to control both the House and Senate, I am confident we can finally get something equally as powerful signed into law.
In addition to secure borders, the American people deserve lower costs for groceries and gasoline. For the past four years, the Biden administration’s out-of-control government spending has caused record-high inflation that has crushed the middle class. The next Congress will combat this inflation by scaling back on the size and scope of government.
We will also reinvigorate the economy by reducing burdensome rules and regulations that have crippled businesses; by extending Trump-era tax cuts that benefit the middle class; by ending taxes on tips, Social Security, and overtime pay; and by unleashing America’s vast energy and mineral wealth.
In Minnesota, one of the best ways we can boost our local economy is by getting critical mineral projects across the finish line. For too long, Democratic administrations — aided by anti-mining, anti-jobs activists — have prevented our miners from developing the Duluth Complex, the largest untapped copper and nickel deposit in the world. This has come at a huge cost to our economy and national security.
Fortunately, President Trump is one of the most pro-mining presidents in American history, and he is eager to get shovels in the ground. Under his leadership, I am confident Congress will pass my Superior National Forest Restoration Act, legislation to overturn Biden’s mining ban in northern Minnesota. Soon, Minnesota’s miners will be able to deliver our mineral wealth to the nation, using the best environmental and labor standards in the world.
I am honored and humbled to be sent back to Washington to serve a fourth term at one of the most consequential times in American history. The American people have afforded us a great opportunity to usher in a new American era marked by success and prosperity. You have my word that we are committed to delivering for the American people.
