Trout Whisperer - Most don’t care for storms...

Many folks around the circumpolar globe agree that along the 65-degree mark of latitude is the very best place on Earth to view the northern lights. It’s also agreed that’s a tough spot to sit on a regular basis. So is it truly the best place then?

If you said where’s a great place to fish, you’d get few arguments about the BWCA, and you could stand fishing rod in hand by the claim, with many agreeing with you.

And northern Minnesota is a much better place to sit to view the northern lights. Matter of fact, you can look at maps detailing why Minnesota is so advantageous to viewing.

Sure you have to watch the aurora borealis forecast, a good source is NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). And if the skies are clear that night, you’re going to catch the greatest light show above Earth, no lightning, no thunder, just awe and wonder somewhere around the 47-degree line of demarcation, maybe from a cabin’s deck, standing with a bunch of friends around a campfire, or a living room with a north facing window ensconced in a wool sweater sipping a hot toddy with all the lights in the house turned off.

It’s a night thing which I’m all about, give me an owl call, or wolf howler, a star-lit sky, Mrs. mittened hand, and toss in the rumor that tonight’s the night for the auroras geomagnetic storm, count me in, cuz I’m definitely gonna be looking from where I think it’s truly the best place, and I like to think many others do as well.
