State of the City address coming this Thursday

Ely will follow the lead of the nation and state, and some much larger cities, when mayor Heidi Omerza delivers a “State of the City Address” later this week.

Omerza’s address, believed to be the first of its kind in Ely, is set for City Hall on Thursday, Jan. 9, starting at 6:30 p.m.

The event is being co-sponsored by the Ely Rotary as well as the Ely branch of the American Association of University Women. It is open to the public.

According to a news release, Omerza has drafted an address entitled “How do so many Fs equal an A+?”

Omerza is scheduled to highlight Frozen, Films, Festivals and Funding to describe recent achievements in the Ely community. She will also discuss future initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life for Ely residents. Key topics will include economic development and community well-being.

Earlier in the week, Omerza will begin a second term as Ely’s mayor.

She is the second woman in Ely’s history to hold the office, brings over 15 years of experience as a city council member, and is also a fulltime teacher at Washington Elementary School.

Omerza has previously served as President of the League of Minnesota Cities, the Coalition of Minnesota Cities and the Greater Minnesota Partnership, demonstrating a commitment to municipal governance and community development.

Residents are encouraged to attend the important event to gain insight into the city’s progress and plans for the future.

For those unable to attend in person, the address will be streamed live on Midco Channel 11 and available for later viewing on that channel.

The event will also be available to be viewed afterward on YouTube - entitled 2025 Ely Mn State of the City Address.
